Strong head wind and nine degrees and rain at the finish, this year was a hard cold wet day for those that finished. Mark O'brien, Rhys Pollock and Tom Robinson broke away around Camperdown. O'brien constantly attacked trying to drop the other two to avoid the sprint but got a rear puncture 12 km out. Battled hard and got back on, then went clear with Rhys. Rhys raced smart and out sprinted O'brien with 100m to go. Great effort guys !

great to see a good positive result for the race - a true australian wonder, and here is hoping that it continues to be around for many more years to come (and retain its title as the oldest one day race in the Southern Hemisphere).

Honor Roll: 2003 Simon Gerrans

The race was first held in 1895. 50 riders entered, and only 7 finished.

The first race was won by Andrew Calder who received 2 hours’ start on the scratchmen. He took 11 hours, 44 minutes, 30 seconds for the 165-mile trip, and was reported to have “got through on eggs, milk, and beef extract".

95 years later, Olympic gold medallist Dean Woods clocked a stunningly-fast 5hours, 12 minutes, 26 seconds to set the course record.
