Better/smoother asphalt is a thing, mainly in the Pyrenees that were known for the rough road surface still in the early to mid 2000s, that has to be said. Smooth vs rough asphalt does make a significant difference.Better asphalt?
I am pretty sure the tires have developed quite a lot as well in 30 years. Maybe you put that under bike technology but it is still small differences over time that adds up. It does makes a lot of difference in the end.Better/smoother asphalt is a thing, mainly in the Pyrenees that were known for the rough road surface still in the early to mid 2000s, that has to be said. Why stop at a triple when we can make it a quadruple ascent while putting a big time bonus at the top each time so they’re all ridden as fast as possible thereby making the current top 10 times obsolete. What if I start a rumour of there being a triple Alpe d'Huez stage (with two times over Col de Sarenne) and get some random Colombian website to write about it?

[Voice of Bing] Could it BE any more perfect?! [/Voice of Bing]Why stop at a triple when we can make it a quadruple ascent while putting a big time bonus at the top each time so they’re all ridden as fast as possible thereby making the current top 10 times obsolete.
Aero of course. Pantani's bike was 6.96Kg or line ball with modern bikes. Comparing Marco Pantani's Bianchi Mega Pro XL vs Tadej Pogačar's Colnago V4RsThe only major improvement in road racing bikes is carbon, isn't it? What else is major? Motors???
Pantani only failed a health check, I don't think he counts as a proven rule-breaker.
Wow, I had completely forgotten his short ban for using insulin.Pantani was suspended as a result of the San Remo raid
Imagine descending the Alpe three times with drunk spectators waiting there for the last MTF. Yeah, that would be absolutely madness[Voice of Bing] Could it BE any more perfect?! [/Voice of Bing]
Le Bourg-d'Oisans > Alpe d'Huez

Because the last lap is the regular Alpe MTF from Bourg d' Oisans? You don't think lots of people will stand there even though its 3x Sarenne before? Why would they be standing on the descent?
Nahh, they've destroyed everyother notable record and the media just tell us is due to 'nutrition'.The repercussions in the media and social media would be very high. It's the most legendary and famous record.

Not sure about Europe, but in the UK the roads have gotten considerably worse in the last 20 years..Better/smoother asphalt is a thing, mainly in the Pyrenees that were known for the rough road surface still in the early to mid 2000s, that has to be said. Of course, thats what I realized and I even edited my post, but I guess you chose to not read that part...I would expect them to be standing on the climb to see the riders go past all 4 times.
Yeah, but climbs get repaved for the Tour (or other big races) and they often use the best possible road surface for it.Not sure about Europe, but in the UK the roads have gotten considerably worse in the last 20 years..

In anticipation of the upcoming Tour route, I'm hoping for a mountain stage that might yield more than 2 proper HC climbs.
When was the last time we had 6000-7000m of elevation gain in a stage??
