Hainan Looks like heaven, its the first place I'll go if I get the opportunity to go to /china.

Last year it looked like some of the roads were dirt. Well sealed roads but covered it flood mud slides and such, I remember seeing photos of some filthy looking riders at the finish.:D

The English language version of the website is useless. I clicked on some of the links on the top page to see the riders and teams taking part and I just got a blank page. Aside from that, anybody has any idea what the terrain might be like?

Last year It had some nasty climbs however they were mostly sprint finishes. I think /ventoso and Shiplevsky got their time mostly throught consistent sprinting. I think they should throw a time trial in there.

This year Hainan looks like hell. :(

Rain and floods made it necessary to evacuate over 200k people.

If Francisco Ventoso won the overall, I'll tell you that it isn't going to be an especially tough parcours - or if it is, the climbs are wasted in a TdF stage-to-Tarbes way. Ventoso is perhaps quicker than his new teammate Rojas, but Rojas will get over tougher terrain than Ventoso. So looks like a sprinter's race.

Usually Hainan has just one sort of top finish, but I dont recall any "nasty climb".

Look at the map (thanks Daotec)
I love the fact that there are no tranfers of riders. They arrive at one place, they stay there, and start there the next morning. And that for all stages We haven't seen that in a lot of races in Europe for a long time.
On a different note, I think Vino will rip the race apart. Especially on those climbs in stage 9.
I guess van Hummel is only there to make sure he has some more victories this season... :p

I sort of figured that, but I was more enquiring whether it was flat as in Tour of Qatar flat, or like the Tour Down Under, where they do go over some hills, but they always end in a bunch sprint (since the race went ProTour that is).

I think less TDU (where they do have some hills, but only really have the one climb that's a challenge in any way, and put the finish too far away from it), and more like this:
http://autobus.cyclingnews.com/road/2005/mar05/tirreno05/?id=stages

That's the Tirreno-Adriatico that Óscar Freire won.

And it will rain during the next week. 30 °C, Humidity 90% and rain, rain, rain. The flood affects parts of the route, so they'll have to shorten stages or cancel them. We'll see.

In my mind not a good idea to hold a cycling race while people lose their homes there or even worse.

Hainan parcours

Hainan is a nice race... did it last year!

There are climbs, longest is about 9km, but they tend to come too far out to really make a difference (or did last year anyway, but I hear there are changes to the route!). In the middle of the island are some ardennes type climbs also but last year it always regrouped (I think the smallest group was 40 riders at the finish). Also the wind can have a big effect on this race!
To all those that think Ventoso can't climb I would like to say that he can...and very well at that! He is in fact one of the best climbers amongst the sprinters...Paris Brussels isn't flat at the end and also Ventoso won Veulta a Emporda last season which goes over a HC climb 20km from the finish on the last day!

Best thing is the hotels are really good, nice buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. Unlike many other races in asia where you get a lunchbag at the start of the day which is usually pretty average...

Thanks for the insight Jono. Not riding this race then? Have you finished your 4 months at MP or are you just scared you'll continue your Lake Quinghai form? :p

Would love to be there but the foot I injured at Hainan last year has kinda given way a bit..more strengthening needed :)

It's good to see that we have more pro cyclists on here :)

I've just checkedo ut your website and seen some of the countries that you do races in (Japan, Korea, China etc.), if I were a little better as a racer (consider me a B-grade hack :), then that would be the sort of racing I would like. A lot of travel and adventure, which is what I like.

***-kissing time is over :p
