I think Lombardi is/was Race director now is Curuchet and they have big network with especially Italians. So I think that's why they start and besides it's the best preparation for season since it contains itt, climbs, flat and race is overall high level because the Argentineans, Uruguayans and Chileans are in the middle of their season. Still I'm not entirely sure why AG2R start all of a sudden. it seems trek livestrong pulled out as well and of course jamis cuz of the death of armando borrajo, team will start in vuelta chile

garrido isn't really a sprinter and sucks anyway last year. mauro richeze is doing quite bad also. goes beyond me why they didn't select their good sprinters like raul dario diaz and ricardo escuela or even angel dario colla

Garrido is a sprinter the way Cândido Barbosa is. He can win short TTs, sometimes medium-length ones, but I guess I must have been dreaming all those top 10s and podium spots he managed in flat races in Portugal.

He hasn't been especially good in the last two years, no, but I recall quite a fun spat between him and Barbosa back in 2007-8. I suspect he's been picked on name value rather than what he can bring to the team, he's getting on a bit.

garrido is a pure itt guy that has some good trackspeed, this is very common in argentina. totally different from explosive barbosa that in his core is a sprinter. garrido is mostly strong in long distance itt, as you could see in volta portugal final itt's and also world championships.

What PT rider would be similar to a guy like Cândido Barbosa?

Hard to say. Barbosa was a power guy, originally a sprinter, who at one point would climb very well (probably thanks to Clinic matters, since he'd suddenly turn into a climbing machine for two weeks in August), and who can still put in a top 10 showing in short and medium ITTs. He is perhaps even more of a threat on a slight uphill (eg stage 2 of the 2009 Volta, to Castelo Branco) than he is on the flat, but he's always a threat on the flat too. He has 8 points jerseys from the Volta and a highest GC position of 2nd.

After his uphill sprinting prowess last year I'd say Manuel Cardoso, but Barbosa's much more versatile than his compatriot. Maybe Danilo Hondo is a good shout, since he got into plenty of breakaways in the mountains and does well, but Barbosa's a better ITT guy. Maybe Óscar Freire, but Freire's less of a power guy and no ITT threat.

Leif Hoste and Philippe Gilbert both got into the top 10 of the final ITT in the Vuelta, but Barbosa's more of a sprinter than either of them (and less of a threat riding solo too).

Maybe Haussler? Geraint Thomas? José Joaquín Rojas? Allan Davis? Boonen is a pretty good TTer when he wants to be, can get over a hill or two, but is much more willing to ride alone or in small groups than Barbosa, who plays sprint train and would never get on with the northern Classics.

Very difficult to describe. If there was a rider capable of doing all the tasks that Barbosa does, as well as he does but on a ProTour scale, we'd ALL know about that rider.

hard to say really. the guys is 172 cm and 72 kg, he's very allround which isn't too rare but also very explosive, bit like bettini I guess and when you add doping to barbosa he makes incredible itt and longer climbs.

I'd say compare him to ventoso, but barbosa is/was better

Of course that would be Rob Partridge (8th in TOB last season).

Fancy Alex Weterhall (stagiere for Cervelo last season) for the ITT. Interested to see how Endura get on. They're making a step up again this season so it'll be interesting.

Even more interesting when they get to europe in the Tours of Qatar, Méditerranéen & Oman

Tondo looks to me like a good one for the overall, but I don't have much of a clue about the South American contingent.

seems one of the best in climbs here but in itt I would think some of the south americans will beat him most notably giacinti. but who knows

Based on earlier posts in this thread, I think I've figured it out for you guys: Candido Barbosa is just like Eddy Merckx.

If Eddy Merckx got spooked out by his first attempt at a GT and spent the rest of his career doing nothing but domestic calendar races and never taking on the top level riders ever, and of course wasn't anything like as good as he was, then sure.

If somebody could hit the ProTour scene and handle it the same way Cândido treats the Portuguese domestic scene, then yes, they'd be like a new Eddy.

In fact, I think Boasson Hagen might be the best comparison - powerful, very good TT, more than useful in a sprint, can climb a bit but not a climber.
