Just rewatched the final kilometres.

A final 5 kilometres with that much downhill shouldn’t be allowed in a WT race, that could have gone even worse than it already did.

Despite the win, not impressed by Welsford. Launches from the front well inside the final 200 metres and even if he hadn’t sat up a bit early it would have been closer than it should have been.

Conversely that was a strong debut by Brennan, zero help from his teammates in the finale but kept position throughout and his kick wasn’t half bad either. As I said pre-race, he has a good chance of being the race’s youngest ever stage winner.
They drop 41m in the last 7.5km?

Rewatched the final kilometers. Welsford mostly won thanks to his team which did an amazing leadout, and he was the 2nd fastest of the pack. Brennan was amazing, if he would've been in a better position, he was 3 wheels behind Welsford, he could've won. He was clearly the fastest one of those participating in the actual sprint.

Yeah he admitted as much in the in the interview. He's still young and learning. Will be interested in his program for the rest of the year.

Welsford launched from 250m (really long sprint for the first race of the season) and was the only one in the wind over the whole sprint.
Brennan final kick was really fast but he was in the slipstream of others until the final 50 metres. The one coming from behind always seems the fastest in everybody analisis but normally it is actually harder sprinting from the 1st position, specially if there is headwind or they left you from more that 150-200 metres.
It’s a classic of cycling that the fast finisher of one sprint start the next one from the front and suddenly he peforms a bit worse 😅

Still a great sprint for Brennan, underrated talent that reminds me to a young Sagan. If Visma makes harder tomorrow climb, he has a great chance vs Pithie, Strong and others of this type.

What an utterly stupid final.
What a great idea to send a fresh and nervous pelton, on the first race day, downhill for the last 5km.

And because it's a flat stage we know it will be whole peloton
And let's make sure it's not just downhill, but a narrow and twisty, with bollards, jagged metal barriers and parked cars for riders to crash into.

Ridiculous that they just cancel hard mountain stages with downhill because of a bit of rain and cold, but when something is actually just stupidly dangerous, and in a small winter trainning race asweel, nobody bat an eyelid

What's the chance the 'new crash analysing committee' put reasons down as unacceptable couse design, rider error I guess will prevail.
