U23 races and talents

From what i have read, the Belgian selection for Tour de l'Avenir will be built around Van Wilder, Vansevenant & Moniquet. The trio finished 4th, 5th and 6th in the latest Course de la Paix.

Van Wilder (2000) won the queenstage in Course de la Paix, as a first year espoir and podiumed in Orlen. In Aosta he lost 20 minutes due to sickness but still managed 14th overall. Vansevenant (1999) won Valle d'Aosta and Tour du Piémont Pyrénéen last month. Moniquet (1998) won Tryptique Ardennais earlier in the year.

Anybody up for a dedicated "Tour de l'Avenir" thread? Or are we gonna post stuff in here? Personally, i don't feel my knowledge of U23 extends far enough beyond the Belgian selection to really start the thread myself.

Think there should definitely be a thread as interest is always there when the race is around the corner. Especially now as a lot of best young riders seem to struggle less and less to convert to WT racing.

That being said, due to Uni, I haven't been able to follow the racing as close as I did at the beginning of the year. Will definitely add to it with my two cents before the racing starts but there are probably some of you who have been following it closer than I have.

Is there already a somewhat reliable startlist? Guess Italy's decision for the team will be a hard one. Also I actually don't see an overwhelming favourite for the race, could be quite open.

If Leknessund is riding, i would think he's among the favorites, but i don't know what Colombia has in store. They seem to be able to pull rabbits out of a hat every time. I simply can't keep up.

I posted the Belgian trio a few posts up. I'm assuming guys like Nonnez and Champoussin will be there for France?
After Arensman wasted season so far (and given he had worked towards Girobio which also didn't work out) and with Schelling and Inkelaar performing in Aosta, i'd guess they are Hollands hope.

Am sure there used to be a stagiare thread, but couldn't find it. This seems as good a place as any for some?

UAE - Nicholas Dalla, Matthew Beers

DQS - Samuel Gaze, Jannik Steimle

EF - Matthew Walls

TREK - Charlie Quartermain, Juan Pedro Lopez, Nicholas Debeaumarche

CCC - Alfred Wright, George Zimmerman

Mitchelton - James Fouche

Thomas Pidcock wins Tour of Alsace stage up Les Planche des Belle Filles

Never really thought of him as an alpine climber before, but he's got the physique for it. It's not an incredible field, but I don't suppose there's too many riders who can win on PBF and Paris-Roubaix?

The new Geraint Thomas!

According to PCS he's 1.57m and 50kg. It's much more surprising that he's so good at his established disciplines of cyclo-cross/TT/cobbles!

That's true. But i also think he won't be in the mix when he'll start riding Paris Roubaix with the pro's. There's an extra added 100 k compared to the U23 P-R that could really make a difference for his size. But, it's interesting to see he can climb this good. Is he riding Tour de l'Avenir or something?

Is he still 1.57m?
I may be wrong but he looks a bit bigger than that on a bike around 1.65m. Maybe his height information is not up to date or maybe is just a wrong impression.

I don't think he is as talented as Van der Poel or Van Aert but he is certainly one to watch for the future

As a CX rider, i don't see him being remotely as successful. You have to know that at that age, van Aert & van der Poel had already made the jump to full pro, and were already dominating. But, i guess it also needs to be said that it might have been easier for them, since the previous generation (van der Haar, Meeusen...) was a lot less talented, and the real top guys like Albert, Stybar, Boom... had left or quit, with only 38 year old Nys still putting up a fight. So, while i do think his results aren't anywhere close, we have to consider the context as well.

I also don't think he'll be suited for Paris Roubaix due to his weight. I know he won the U23 PR, but that 's 100 km less and it's hard to imagine a guy his weight duke it out over 270k with guys like van Aert, Pollit, van der Poel...

But i could see him turn into a GC rider (whether or not 1 or 3 weeks remains to be seen). He's small and light, and he has a very good ITT in him. Turns out he climbs really well, so there is definitely enough there to develop further. I could see him do very well in the Ardennes classics, Lombardia, San Sebastian... as well.

His build is just completely different, so you can't compare him to van Aert or van der Poel. I can't see either of them win on Planche de Belles Filles either.

I'm going to be a bit chauvinistic, but very impressive by Van Wilder, still a 1st year U23 (and the only one in the top 10), and aiming to become a GC guy, not a pure ITT specialist like most in the top 10. Also, he's a small and light guy, very comparable to Evenepoel in size.

Regarding Belgium, i don't think Verschaeve is of the same level as the real favorites, and i think Van Wilder and Vansevenant will prove a year too young. I can see the three of them compete for a top 10, but not really for the overall win. Hope i'm wrong though.

Also wondering about Arensman. Hasn't been his year so far. Don't rate Schelling as high so for the time being i'm thinking Inkelaar might be the one to look for in the Dutch selection. I assume it will be his last year in the U23's?

Inkelaar is a 1997 rider, so this is his final season of U23 eligibility. I think he might actually be the big favourite here, along with the Italians and perhaps Rubio, but that TTT may leave him a bit behind the European favourites. I am also keen to see what Van Wilder and Vansevenant do here, Verschaeve said an hour or so ago in a Tweet he was sic last week, so I'd think domestique duty for him.

How come Denmark isn't going?

They are, that startlist isn't complete yet I'm afraid, hopefully it will be soon. Still missing the teams from GB, Denmark, Russia, Ecuador, Hungary and the UCI WCC teams. Australia have confirmed their teams but First Cycling is yet to add them to their startlist.
