Where I live in the UK cotswolds deep mud is the norm in winter and its carry or drag your bike if not using narrow tyres.
When I raced mud tyres were common, I remember using Specialized Storm 1.8's at one point. Seemed to work pretty well.
 
The obsession with weight & rolling resistance means there probably isn't a proper mud tyre for the XC teams. The ones available don't seem fit for the job; designed for wet/damp conditions, not proper mud.

However, it was a good weekend of racing; some surprising winners/podium places, and others disappointing.......On to Nove Mesto at the end of May.

Agreed. Regardless of equipment, a "B" course should have been ready to go, given how unrideable much of the XCO course was in the rain. I've done races like that, which I think is acceptable at a local or national level. But at the international level, I think it was a bit too much. All said though, it was great to see world cup season start again and who's in the mix.

Also, I absolutely loved the post race interviews from Wyn with the XCO riders!
 
Looks like both Puck & Pidcock are on the entry lists for Nove Mesto........nothing about MvdP (probably playing golf)

The relationship between Olivia Onesti and the BH Coloma Team has come to an end at one of the most unexpected moments of the calendar.

French XCO Champion, Olivia Onesti has left BH Coloma by mutual consent; she hasn't raced since gettiing concussion earlier in the year.
 
Mathieu back on the MTB! A course he likes a lot, wouldn’t be surprised if he’s already winning one.
 
Another race organiser jumping the gun; same thing happened last year for a race in Germany, Bike the Rock……..
 
So if he's riding Tour de Suisse as suggested, no chance to get into a cross-country World Cup until Haute Savoie, just 2 weeks before World Champs.

He's not racing worlds.

Though if he is, he's not giving himself any chance.......I just don't get it; prepare properly, with a number of races, and he could possibly challenge. But no......
Until he/ or his team drops the compulsory attendance at the Tour, it's not happening.
 
2nd XC World Cup of the year - Nove Mesto na Morave.

Some exciting, and tactical XCC racing......Puck coming from the back to win; then Pidcock hanging around last for 4-5 laps before making his move - nearly pulled it off; but the excellent Azzaro pipped him in the sprint.
Neff was looking good until being taken out by Keller......
 
Was a bit mystified by pidcock's start/stop tactics, there were multiple surges and hanging at the back. Wouldn't it have been more economical to slowly drift up in the group and then do a couple hard attacks while saving some energy for the sprint too?

Women's xco is on ATM. Stigger is solo, but the gap has not exceeded 20s yet.

Pidcock said in the post race interview that he considers the middle of the group to be the most difficult and most dangerous place to be so he reckoned he would wait until things settled down a bit before moving up. He did say he might have left it one lap too late.
 
Cool to see a local kid (Canadian prairies) that lined up at some of the same CX races as this middle aged fart making a good show of himself in the U23 race.
 
Ah, the U23 races - no longer shown live as previously was. A major mistake; live timing doesn't really cut it in 2026....


Stigger was impressive, and can she stay competitive all season; she does tend to blow hot or cold. Jenny up there again with Frei. Evie had a good race and was looking at a podium until her crash.....no broken bones but she's already had a concussion in Brasil 2 years ago.
Puck's first XCO race since the Worlds in September - and probably needs a race or two to get the feeling back; and rooty courses aren't her thing, which she recognises.

Which makes what Tom does incredible really; turns up to his first XCO race since Andorra in July, and is the man to beat again; Luca kept him honest and came within 5 secs on the penultimate lap - then Tom turned on the afterburners......his win % is ridiculous, and even more so when he usually starts way back. Luca might be the favourite for the Overall at the moment.
Good to see Colombo get a podium, and the Scott-Sram team up there before Riley's puncture.

Looks like another muddy race.......Wins in XCC for Andreassen & Frei........
 
Complete BS that Rissveds didn't get a penalty for what happened. Yeah, it was muddy, and she slid out, but it isn't like Jenny didn't know it was slick, when she did her slide tackle. Complete BS. Rissveds saying Blunk "closed her line" yeah, when you divebomb someone within a minute of the start, they might not expect you're going to be such a meat head.

Blunk closed the line, but it was too muddy. It would've worked in dry conditions
