The last Vino quote is hilarious, he says he often loans money left and right. I wonder which side of Vino you have to stand on to get a "$100k loan."

OK, I haven't been able to pay any attention to cycling lately, so I've probably missed something, but how did these e-mail get leaked anyway?

Hmm, I was pretty sure hacking into someone's e-mail is a crime in most nations out there.

So we're discussing (not so much in this thread, but this was also posted in General News earlier) riders' reputation, basically everyone in that thread assumes they are guilty just because of their reputation being less than perfect, and yet the only source of this rumor is something that is known and 100% guaranteed criminal activity?

I see a lawsuit coming, and I will support that 100% in this case.

P.S. To kind of put the things in perspective, Kolobnev's salary was estimated to be at least 500.000 euros/year, and possible closer to 750.000 euros

The rumor of riders buying races is as old as bike racing.

What are the chances those who were paid off will say anything

As many accusations that have been hurled over the years there have been no action on any of them (that I remember of).

Maybe the ultimate dope of bike racing, hard cold cash.

so whoever uncovered these emails is alleging that vino used an unsportsmanlike tactic to gain and exploit a competitive edge, and that all of his protests of innocence are lies?

i feel like i've heard that story before.

Anybody know the date of the money transfer?

I could understand Kolobnev borrowing money after his positive test.

I would have thought that a monument win would have been worth a lot more than 100K to Kolobnev since he had a good salary and many second places. Of course, he might have just taken a payout knowing he couldn't win anyways.

From the article

"’Illustre based its report on an exchange of emails between the two racers
dating back to the day after the race"

But yet again, how trustworthy of a source is that?

A lawsuit against who? Unless he can show that the staff of magazine hacked his account, all the magazine did was run a story based on information from a source.

The only odd thing is that 100K would seem to be cheap for a win as big as LBL and such a win would be a huge plus for Kolobnev's palmares. He has been close too many times to sell LBL without a reason better than a 100K. He might have had that reason. He might have thought that Vino was stronger and he might as well take the guaranteed 100 thou.

Yeah, it's the evil media's fault. They just make stuff up out of thin air so they can be sued for libel.

Unless there are e-mails that contain something more explicit than a financial transaction, Vino will deny it, Kolobnev will deny it, and nothing will ever come of it.

This sort of thing should not surprise anyone.

These guys show up but they come packin' shotguns. And they won't be bought off with a Big Kahuna burger.

Kolobnev was earning 500,000 euros per year at Katusha, he should have asked for more from Vino.

If this is true it makes a mockery of the event and the legitimacy of it all. Didnt landis say that races could be bought easily?

Races have been bought and sold since the very early days of the sport. It doesn't happen so often now but it certainly does happen.

Also, its not just money - look at Gilbert's behaviour at the end of the year once he had an agreement to go to BMC.

I move to fold this thread into the Vino Comeback Thread lol. And then create a separate Vino (sub)Forum! Vino4-ever!

(even if against the rules, buying/selling of races and buying the help of other riders/teams for tactical purposes is as old as the sport and it seems a bit out-there for a magazine to suddenly decide to start writing about this, using Vino as an example. was the publication in question a cycling magazine?)

$100,000 for LBL does indeed seem cheap. You'd think that La Doyenne is worth a bit more. We need a poll: how much would it pay to gift
1) MSR
2) RVV
3) PR
4) LBL
5) Lombardia
6) a stage at the Giro
7) at the TdF
8) at the Vuelta
9) the Worlds
10) some other classic

Obviously stages have been gifted for various reasons, so 6-8 are maybe not good examples.
