One of the breakout stars of the 2023 season has definitely been Oier Lazkano. The Basque rider has taken the world by storm with eye-catching performances on Argentine mountains, Flemish cobbles, French cotes, in the Swiss Alps and on Spanish muritos. He's not half bad at time trialing either.

And he loves a good old breakaway, which has laid the foundation for most of his top results. As Spanish champion, there will be a bit pressure on his shoulders ahead of the Vuelta, but if given the chance, he seems to be able to deliver the goods. Both as a domestique for Mas and as a stage hunter, he could very well be on his way to a pretty successful home GT.

Someone who doesn't seem to run out of energy as proven by his awesome ride in Dwars door Vlaanderen, and he can TT as well so can finish off a breakaway solo.

And he seems to be in really good shape just before the Vuelta, so very much looking forward to what he can achieve there.

I wonder what he can do on shallow MTFs and punchy stuff from a break. If he can add that to his arsenal, he can win a stage or two in this Vuelta. Signs are its no problem as long as the climbing isn't super enough.

This guy will probably be one of the best GT breakaway specialists. I have no doubt he will show this in this Vuelta with this shape and a nice and easy race program lately, but the biggest question is the classics. He does seem to have the tools he need to anticipate alá Asgreen and Pedersen in the big ones, but obviously isn't at that level yet, but can maybe get their because his motor on his day is just insane.

My favourite attack of the season, held them off for 160k in the break, I'll never forget the look of confusion on Kristoff's face as he toiled in his wheel, and his interview where he said how happy he was with 2nd because Spanish people don't usually do well in the cobbled classics.

Poor Christophe Laporte, I didn't even remember he had won, never seen the commentators be more excited for the sprint for 2nd.

More than deserved of a thread in the forum, Movistar generally aren’t the absolute worst with letting non-GC teammates have freedom to attack, so it will be interesting to see how his Vuelta turns out.

I hope not. I hope he did some work and either was planned to drop or lost contact (bad curve or the like) and let go. I was wanting to say he was maybe already tactically losing time for breakaways in the coming days, but that doesn't make sense in a short 14K race where he could have been instrumental to win the TTT.

He found right moment to attack and was strong enough to hold on and also catch Molenaar before the line. He's in a good GC position now, so the team can use him tactically. Rubio and Sánchez will probably do better than him on stage 4.

I wasn't sure he was going to be allowed to join too many breakaways this year, but today he made them all look like Andalosers. Well, he also had a lot of luck on his side. When he didn't break Prodhomme the first time it looked like he had overplayed his hand, but fortunately for him he could get it done in the end.

Lazkano's engine is huge and looking at his size, I think he has a great future in the cobbled classics maybe he will become the first Spanish Paris Roubaix winner.

So another podium for the guy after a long breakaway. However this time he actually did it from the peloton. He was also the only one to empty his glass on the podium, so maybe he really does have more class than Van Aert

García Cortina also looked good in Omloop yesterday, so Movistar might be racking up some more decent results in Belgium as the season progresses.

He and the team actually did a pretty good job today, but they didn't get much out of it in the end. He would probably have finished in the top 10 if he had sucked wheels a bit more, but chapeau to him for aiming higher. Next up is DDV, but it will be hard for him to replicate last year's race and/or result.

I can give everyone an update if you and some actual humans would like one. He started his classics campaign by winning a race and then he gradually got worse to the point where we only saw him in Roubaix while getting dropped. I haven't heard about any injury after Roubaix, but he might need a bit of rest now to find his legs again ahead of the next races.
