Seems doping gets all the press. Curious about what cheating folks think is "worse". Multiple answers. Add your own in discussion...

FORGOT the Multi Answer part - and I don't know how to edit it. So pick your favorite worst one...

I consider most small riders to be cheating blatantly.

Almost Belgium nats colours to boot.

You forgot hanging onto cars, crashing yourself to be allowed a second chance at the start, and getting your domestique to bring you illegal feeds inside the last few km:p
Oh and bribing the ASO to create a route for your rider, or as its known in Katusha hq - sobornando al unipublic para tener solo muros en La Vuelta

In all seriousness though, the damage to others ones are worst, the bribing your opponent to lose least bad (cos you still have to beat the other 200 riders, unless you can bribe them too in which case, good for you).

With the motor in bike thing, that would be fun to try. I would never try doping cos of the health effects, but in fantasy land I'd give riding a motorized bike in cycling races a go one day no doubt.

I wouldn't be a **** about it and win multiple Tour de France's or anything. Just some fun breakaway performances, KOM jerseys and that. Maybe try to lap the field at the worlds thereby disqualifying them (to see if that actually works). Sell my nationality to the UAE (who are always in the market for a half decent sportsman, and as a bonus thus help globalize the sport) donate half the prize money to charity to make me feel better about myself, and retire (early of course) with Pierre Rolland swearing under oath that me and David Veilleux were the only 2 riders he never saw dope.

They look a bit like the shoes Aru was wearing on the podium after his stage win. I can't find a full length pic of him but the soles were at least 2 inches thick.

And the podium girls still towered over him

This is a bit like arguing whether killing someone with a knife or with a gun is worse.

That said, unless you are doing any of these all the time, then doping wins. It is cheating all of the time and completely misrepresents your actual capabilities.

Fixing races (bribe opponents or being bribed to lose). By far. The worst cheating out there. In any sport...
Lowest form of life in sports. With doping you at least try to win (not that I defend this win at all costs approach), but intentionally losing goes at the heart of integrity of sports. From childhood on we played to win whatever games we played. That´s why we love to watch sports. To see the best prevail....

Tainting opponent's water is worse but I didn't see that option

numero 5...........voted crashing an opponents as that's potentially life threatening rest are just 'poor gamesmanship'

but why could I only choose 1 option........OP suggests multi choice

Worst must be that which directly endangers lives or wellbeing of other participants - crashing other riders, tacks on the road, interfering with food and drink of other riders.

Next must be cheating the public of your best efforts, closely followed by cheating the public by producing unethically increased efforts.

So :

1. Assaults, direct or not.

quite a gap

2. Throwing races.
3. Doping, including bribing a labratory.
4. Mechanical aids and bribing officials.

all very close.

Who needs to bribe anyone at a lab? If we are to believe Hein Verbruggen, he could make anyone positive. See Floyd Landis and his below-ratio Testosterone positive.

Is it cheating if the Federation or promoter is the one manipulating the outcome of the race?

I don't know how many of you saw the FIFA match fixing article over at the NYT. It is impressive.

With bribing at least the other party has a choice...

As a fan, I agree. Fixing races takes everything out of what sport is. Doped riders still have to out-dope and out-race the others (which is still super entertaining). I don't count "gifting" as we see it, as fixing the race. More like the Vino or Hincapie variety. Deliberate crashing/harm is the worst on paper, but I haven't seen or heard of it actually happening (besides Tanya Harding).

As a competitor, doping is the most frustrating. A guy running on the sidewalk to cut a corner in the road race (like hanging onto a car) earns a "what an ***" reaction, but that's it. A lot of road race directors don't have good protocol when starting a race, and people often end up jumping the gun: that's more funny than anything as they catch themselves, stand still and then slide into the pack.

I've been physically shoved into the fence (hand on hip from behind) in a race with UCI points. And there have been other stupid physical moves, but at lesser events.

I count doping as worse.

Brilliant.
