I sometimes make coffee at home and quite frankly it tastes like cat piss (a slight exaggeration as I actually don't know what cat piss tastes like :D). There's a local company called Merlo and they are quite good:

I detect that somebody's been shopping at Colruyt! :D

I've said it elsewhere I think, but if you want the finest Yirgacheffe you'll ever taste, take a trip to Brugge, where the folks at Javana will fix you up.

Ethiopia: it's not just mad geladas and Rasta protogods! :D:cool:

italian espresso, for example mauro centopercento.
or indian monsooned malabar from small roasteries like fausto.
make it in a caffetière on the plate. pure or with hot milk.

my coffie experiences in belgium were diverse. the best ever i had in dinant! have to go there some day again :)
in the flemish part (villages), it was tough. and always with egg liqueur, strangely!

Now we're in my territory. I speak all forms of coffee.

For years when I lived in the Midwest I ordered Peet's Major Dickason's Blend whenever I could.

I still love that stuff, but after I moved to San Francisco I was spoiled for choice. Most of the time I ended up buying very fresh organic Fair Trade beans from Rainbow grocery, a worker-owned store in the city.

Now that I'm in Los Angeles, there is probably just as much good coffee around but things here are much farther apart. And, anyway, I'm not as picky about coffee now so most of the time I end up drinking this Morning Blend from Trader Joe's because it's convenient (in my neighborhood).

It's actually not bad.

Whenever I can, though, I still go to Peet's. Last couple of weeks I've been drinking this

Which is quite tasty.

Probably the best coffee I've had in recent years was freshly roasted something or other I got in Costa Rica. I stood there and watched them roast it. It was fantastic. I can't wait to go back.

Krebs, If it's still open, there's a great coffee roaster and cafe in Guanajuato...it's called CafeTal. If your travels find you in the area...que rico! I always buy a bunch of fresh roast to take home.

I have an espresso machine at home so I'm always on the lookout for good whole beans. When I score Stumptown espresso roast out of Portland, it's usually heaven. Bird Rock in La Jolla is a surprisingly interesting blend. Naked Lounge out of Sac and Chico is sometime great as is Temple. San Francisco streets are paved with great coffees...try Blue Bottle at several locations. San Rafael has Equator Coffee Roaster...excellent. Of course Peets is a standard of good coffee...I like an equal blend of their Sumatra, Italian, and Arabian Mocha Java which I find smoother than the Major.
Great thread Michielveedeebee!

Been drinking coffee everyday since I was 14.

This week it's been Mocha Java, an ancient blend of beans from Java and Yemen. Love the berry tones. Need to get back into the African beans I think.

Can't help, but out of all "usual" coffees avaiable here, this Jacobs Krönung is really the best.

Of course, there is nothing better than having a nice coffee(stop) in a Dutch coffeeshop, made with a really good professional machine.
I asked for the prize, and they only costs around 5.000€-10.000€ :D

As for the "Krönung", always drinking at home, I just cook water and brew it freshly, every single cup, and use a usual filter-holder. Camping-like.
I hate machines and pots with "old" coffee, but those pad-machines really produce a nice coffee I must say.

That sounds like a great suggestion. Really, I think great coffee is about the roast and the freshness and the preparation, more than it is about the brand, or even the bean, within reason.

So in keeping with Quixote's suggestion, the best thing to do for good coffee is to find a roaster local to your area and buy there. I've heard that some people are even buying small roasters and roasting their own.

That's probably further than I want to go, but I think I am going to try to find a local roaster here in LA. If anybody knows of one, I'd appreciate the info.

Starbucks (Italian roast, or mocha). But only in the little packets you can buy. But Starbucks coffee shops burn their coffee deliberately, or so I've heard. (Anyone else heard that rumor?) But I think it's true because I actually like McDonalds McAfee better than fresh coffee from a Starbucks shop.

Never heard this but it sounds like urban legend info. When roasting all coffee gives off a burnt smell. I prefer the smaller roasters, but Starbucks certainly offers a good brew. I haven't tried the Mac coffee, but as you report, they're pleasing plenty of coffee drinkers. Cheers

When you find a great LA roaster, be sure to report that with an address. I pass through frequently on the way to San Diego. I have often speculated that there are probably a number of small LA area roasters that specialize in the highest quality beans roasted specifically for espresso.

Will do. Look for it in this thread. Some time. Soon, I hope.
