What's up with Scarponi?

He will be good come Giro time, fine tuning his peak this year.

You can't be great at the Giro if you suck at races like Giro dell Appenino or Trentino (unless it is caused by temporary infection). I remember when Simoni or Cunego were winning Giro in dominant style, they preceded it by winning these races. The Giro is simply too close.
Maybe he's really treating Giro as preperation for TdF. Maybe Cunego will ride as leader.

We shall see.

Last year he was already too good at Trentino and perhaps this year he tried to get his peak later on, for the last week of Giro.
Time will tell.

Scarponi has done much better here in the past, last year he won of course and then had a successful Giro so to see him perform like this I think he will not challenge this year.

At what point did he decide to go after Giro rather than Tour, perhaps too late?_?

The giro is still a week away and lasts 3 weeks, so he might be hitting top form when he needs it most. What remains a mystery for all of us i think, is how he rode trentino; was he conservative, did he test himself (enough); did he ride within preset parameters, or was he struggling (which would be a bad sign).

Has he commented on today's performance? He came in at 12:39 55th. One minute ahead of the bus.

I also wonder how the weather impacted him today, or if he thought he might get sick given the cold/rain/snow.

Cunego is in good form, but his TT isn't good enough to be team leader.

Took it very easy the last two days. Peaking too soon will cost one or two guys a shot at winning the Giro, it's still 5 weeks before the hardest stages.

But is the level of time trialling at the Giro so high, to immediately rule out Cunego? And who will put these minutes onto him? Menchov and Evans will not be here, Contador is not there.

I don't think that the guys who are now dominating Trentino are at their peak at all. The idea of Trentino is such, that it is a competion of guys who prepare their peak for the Giro, and are roughly at the same stage of preparations. They will all improve.

Scarponi peaked too early last year, he will be trying to avoid that this year.

he is peaking for il giro,he realized that last year he went too hard in way too many races in the spring(san remo, catalunya, trentino i remember).he's no contador let's face it.
i think he will do extremely well in il giro, big favourite.
by the way on appeninno he was going like a machine on la bocchetta.i wouldn't be worry about him or ivan basso.

He's got better acceleration than Basso... should play to his advantage!

Before the Punta Valeno stage Niemiec said in a interview for Polish media thet they will ride for Scarponi, because he feels good and wants to win the race, strange regerding that Michele was lossing 15 minutes on every harder climb.

I do not think that Scarponi is that bad, I think that yesterday he realized that he is not strong enough to ride with the best riders so he decided that there is no sense in fighting for 10-15 place and he took a easy ride.

As a supporter of Polish riders also Neimiec worries me.... I do not know if he is in poor form or what, but he should be riding better in such races. In the interview he said that he feels good. On both hard stages he was riding with Scarponi, today we saw that after Michele lost contact Niemiec stayed with him, and only after some time he decided to go faster. Ok Przemek is Scarponi gregario but what's the point of staying with your leader when he is making a training ride 10 minutes behind the best riders  does not make any sense. Scarponi needs someone to talk with or what ???? If yes he should wait, and would have a bunch of guys to chat with in the grupetto

niemiec also said that Scarponi was angry because Cunego was taking part in Trentino. Well looking at his and Damiano's ride he should not complain ;)

Both Scarponi and Niemiec were very good in Appennino. Nothing to worry about. As I said - the stages where the Giro will be won and lost are 5 weeks away :)

More interesting is that Cunego have done already five stage races this year and he seems to be scheduled for Romandie also. And of course he will do the LBL. And next Giro ? Is he going to end his season at the end of may ? It really seems to be way too much racing imo. He might be tired once the most important Giro stages starts.
