Anyone like to bet on cycling?
I haven't since that German/Austrian won a TT? 3-4 yrs ago and subsequently got pinged for performance enhancers. I laid him and lost big. Haven't touched cycling since but getting my enthusiasm for a wager again, mark

I had a bet on Thomas de Gendt winning the Giro: odds were 750 to 1. Also took a couple of bets that Thomas de Gendt would finish in front of Scarponi, Basso, Cunego, Gadret.

Did the tommy dg bet (only 500 on the sites i saw) but knew it was more likely he would podium than win so made it either way.;)

i never bet big- more than 1 or 2 squid, other than when i saw 66-1 odds on Dennis menchov to win le big one.

I laid against Rabbotini midway through his stage win in the Giro. Still cheered him on in the final 100 meters:D
Apart from that I put 250 euros into my Betfair account before the start of TDF last year, and are still using that money:p

make a lot of small bets on outsiders all the time which gives some nice extra cash :)

sometimes a bigger bet, but usually they turn out to cancel the wins lol (Rujano giro...)

Not very often but have had the odd good payout - Contador at Paris Nice and Le Tour 2007, and Wiggins to win the Dauphine 11. Lost a chunk on a Contador Giro-Tour double last season though.

I generally make small profits on match-ups, especially in TT's (sometimes bookies hand out gifts, like Martin to beat Vino yesterday @ 1,35; sometimes there's a lot of value - Nibali to beat Cobo at GdL last year @ 2). ROI + 10% on cycling, I guess (but I'm talking small stakes here, so I don't bet my "hard-earned" on cycling, nor on any other sport, for that matter). It's definitely a hard sport to bet on, though. Match-ups for sprint stages when the break stays away make for a lot of trouble, for example.

Backing Kristoff E/W in De Panne @ 101 (E/W @ 26 won) and @ 26 the day after were probably my most impressive bets.

I do it quite a lot although with small bets, i got some profit out of it but do it mostly for the fun. I especially like head to head bets and especially in time trials were you sometimes get some crazy good odds.

I bet only on Betfair

Mostly I bet riders to lose

I don't really have favourite riders or teams so I have no problems betting for or against anyone. During a big tour it's basically a full time job

all the time...but contrary to some of you I don't think it's easy money, it's hard work. But it's worth it

yes indeed. it's lots of work and time. I follow all and search all. it's meticulous work, therefore I know much more about cycling than all journalists, because everything depends on it for me. but it's also my hobby so I'm lucky. still I can decide whatever I want. I'm my own boss and if I want to lay on the beach for a week I can do that.

Do you have to register as self-employed if you make above X euros a year or anything like that? How does it work with health insurance, retirement and the like? It's bad enough for normal self-employed people, so I figure it must be even worse in a relatively new, barely regulated job field.

If I remember correctly Ryo is a teacher or something.

As someone who was born and raised in a bookies (my grandfather was a bookmaker) I've no qualms about betting on cycling as I think there's tremendous value to be had (but God only knows what the over-round is on the book).

My first big win was on backing Juan Mercado at 125/1 to win Stage 10 of the 2006 TdF when he rode for Agritubel. I had £10 e/w with William Hill and I remember it as if it was yesterday.

I struck gold last year in the Vuelta. Had £40 e/w on Cobo at 150/1 at my local Paddy Power and another £11 e/w at 125/1 with Boyles after stage 4. That was a right result.

Drew a blank in the classics at the start of the year and lost £100 on Cancellara the day he crashed at the feed-zone.

The Giro was a profitable race. I had £350 on Garmin to win the TTT at 4/5 and had £800 on J-Rod to win the stage to Asissi, at varying odds of between 5/2 and 2/1. I lost a small sum backing Scymd of Liquigas for the overall at 100/1....but thems the vagaries.

I did have a hard-lines story a few years ago as I had £50 e/w on Sastre to win the TdF at 33/1.....the year Landis doped. Alas, Sastre finished 4th and the e/w terms were only top 3 and the bets are settled on who stands on the podium and I didn't get paid out.

One good thing with the advent of the internet is the number of firms now pricing cycling up, although getting a decent sized bet on isn't easy. Take this Dauphine as an example; after depositing £100 into my Bet365 account, I attempted to place £50 e/w on Menchov at 80/1, only for the bet to be restricted to a max £12.50 e/w. The immediately cut the price to 50/1 and the 'value' as I saw it had gone.

I'm hoping that he'll follow the right wheels and nick a place at 20/1.

Bets are usually settled on who stands on the podium, so no.

Good post. At last years Vuelta as we know Anton wasn't in goodshape and was out of contention last week. I noticed he finished with the bus the day before Angliru so I thought he was trying to target the Queen Stage. I was due to win £1250, if he took the stage and halfway up Angliru he attacked and had a small lead. Cobo was too strong that day though and I think Anton finished 6th. I was gutted. I agree though, there is definitely value in cycling but I wondered if it was just Paddy Power who limit big bets? Are other bookies similar?

PS. I may be completely wrong here but I think Andy S is just targetting a stage here hence the timegap today.
