TEAM ST KITTS & NEVIS AT THE CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Mendrisio- Switzerland Sept. 22nd 2009

All the top male & female cyclists in the world have gathered to compete for the title of World champion, in the disciplines of Individual Time Trial and Road Racing, amongst them were the contingent from St Kitts & Nevis. Reggie Douglas and Kathryn Bertine the reigning male and female National Cycling Champions, were joined by James Weekes and Monica Ceccon.

The whole expedition was made possible due to the largesse of Bio-Sport/ FLY, the new sports hydration drink that the team trains on, and Oscar Petroboni and family who have housed the whole team.

Even before the actual race events have begun, the team was making its presence felt, on the first training ride they happened upon Fabian Cancellara, the Swiss National TT champion, and rode with him as long as they were able to keep his pace. The following day during the TT practice on a closed course, the guys were stopped by the Norwegian TV news crew, .who were clearly interested to determine who they were and conducted on camera interviews about their country of origin and the state of cycling in the Nation.

The schedule of events which is being aired live on Eurosport is as follows:-

WEDNESDAY 23rd 2.00pm ELITE FEMALE IND. TT (Kathryn/Monica)

THURSDAY 24th 11.30am ELITE MALE IND. TT (Reggie/James)

SATURDAY 26th 9.00am ELITE FEMALE ROAD RACE (Kathryn/Monica)

After riding the closed to traffic Time Trial course today Kathryn commented “It was very challenging but inspiring”

James Weekes was “Overcome with how amazing the whole thing is, being here in Switzerland with the mountains all around us, absolutely fantastic, thanks FLY”

Reggie had this to say “I am overwhelmed to be here at the World Championships, and to be among good friends and good people, and to be a part of such a huge event and being amongst athletes I have admired over the years, like Fabian Cancellara, I also want to thank FLY and the SKN Cycling federation for making this possible”

The St Kitts & Nevis Federation wishes all the athletes well and hope they have a wonderful time during the event, we will keep you posted.

One of the girls even beat 2 Euros!

"they rode with him as long as they were able to keep his pace."

Hmm, the two guys went under 40kph in the race while Spartacus did over 50? Although I'm sure he rides easy from time to time, I'm guessing they weren't able to keep his pace all that long!

Well that blog took all the Cool Runnings feel out of it, especially the picture of the podium. 3 white chicks is not what I had in mind when I thought St. Kitts and Nevis.

The woman Kathryn Bertine is from the USA she wrote a column for ESPN about trying to make the olympic team. She got dual citizianship St. Kitts and Nevis.

I really enjoyed that column. I first got mad that someone was trying to 'become a citizen' of a random country just to get to the olympics, but after reading all of her installments (something like 12-13 diaries over a year and a half i think) I really liked her, and what she was bringing to the island. I haven't kept up with her web page in a while, hopefully she is still keeping up what she started there.

On a funny side note, I clicked on the url above, and it was blocked by my works filter and labeled as 'porn'.
