who here smokes?

honest question really.

i am a smoker, nothing out of this world(about 2 packs per week of a portuguese brand( SG ventil) that has much smaller cigarettes so they run out faster if you know what i mean) depending on how many times i go out at night(you smoke more and people ask you for more cigarettes at night :p)

i always smoke a cigarette with my coffee and take about 3 coffees per day(i don't use sugar in my coffee inb4 some1 asks) so that makes it about 3 per day more 1 or 2 tops during the day. that makes about 4 cigarettes per day tho there also days where i smoke less( there are a lot of days of 1 or 2 cigarettes)

anyway i am just curious since this is a cycling forum to see how many people smoke and also ride their bikes. also would like to know if any1 has noticed some losses on their pulmonary capacity i can honestly say i haven't noticed any and this is the fittest i have been in years.

btw for those who don't smoke please avoid the moral lessons, they kind of are annoying :p

Nope. Never have. No worries of a lecture from me, each to their own (so long as it's not blown in my face) and I appreciate your outrageous contribution to the tax base!

your welcomed. i never blow the smoke to other people's face as i think it is a lack of respect for the other person( friend or not)

i do smoke rolling tobacco when i am not feeling lazy which makes it about 3 times cheaper . . .

talking about rolling tho. also who has ever tried to smoke some drugs? light ones ofc i have done some weed and stuff of that kind but never tried nor will ever try any heavy drug. i haven't smoked any type of drugs for over a year and a half tho and its not for the lack of opportunity.

Good question. I ride my bike but I don't smoke and I never have. If you are interested in the effect of your smoking on your fitness why don't you try not smoking for a few months when you are training particularly hard and see if you do notice any difference.

BTW: how long have you been smoking? IIRC you're 18 years old? Did you start smoking before you started cycling?

i am 21 actually. i started smoking when i went to college as i get the stressies (lul) during the exam season and test season and smoking does help to calm me down

i have been riding bikes since i was like 4 or 5 so we could say i started smoking a little after i started cycling :p

i did do a funny experiment the other day by smoking a cigar half away up a climb to see if i noticed some difference(the hardest part of the climb was starting where i stopped) and i can't say i noticed any difference tbh it costed me to climb some parts but thats mostly because those parts ramped up to btw 10 and 14%(short sections not a long climb)

Nope! I don't smoke and I don't think I've ever run across another Northern California with any form of the habit. However, it would not bother me. I've seen some old black and whites with cycling smokers...so I assume it was part of the culture at one point. Anyway, a rare problem with smokers is if they have any kind of inherited blood clotting condition. It's extremely rare with no symptoms until too late, but worth ruling out before you head into extra smokes a day.
At any rate, your question is a good one...I'd ride with a smoker until I get dropped.

Smoked a cigarette (Winnie Blue from memory) when I was about 12, with some mates.. one of them told me you had to suck the smoke into your lungs... coughed my guts out for about 15 minutes... apart from a cigar on my bucks night, haven't smoked in the intervening 35 years.

I smoke cigarettes only for now (used to smoke cigars, and drugs, and chewing yankee smokeless tobacco)

Well it is interesting, I can run 5km under 19 minutes, 10km under 38 minutes, ride steady power for hours half IM 90km leg 2h53 with some serious hills. It hurts when I am on hills mostly, I quited before 10 years or so, feeling much better but not faster:eek: Swimming is very nasty when smoking.

I allways wander how fast should I be without cigarettes. Often people looking ate me at marathon finish line when smoking, I just do not care.
I am now on 7-8 cigarettes per day, was on 4.

P.S. How do I did this? Duplicate posts.

My dad smokes, and my grandfather did, but I don't, but that's not to say I haven't tried a puff or two, but that's about it. I'm impressed Parrulo you smoke durries (Aussie slang for cigarettes) and you still drop your mates when you ride.

Never have smoked, never would consider smoke. I think it is absurd that someone in their right mind would want to start inhaling all those nasty chemicals. I have a few friends who smoke and have done so for a few and they notice the struggles they have when doing physical exercise. For some people they may not notice the difference of smoking but when you get older you certainly will and so will the inside of your body. I don't really why someone wouldstart nowadays but I would be open for people to explain to me why they do.

My opinion and experience of smoking seems to contrast a fair bit with some other people on here.

EDIT: I didn't mean any disrespect towards your post about your smoking experience with my comments, Parrulo.

One of the things I love about Austlraia, hates smokers. Unfortunately in my part ofthe world you're unusual if you don't smoke, and non-smokers have to put up with smokers (rather than the other way around i Australia).
Of course, I'm specific to tobacco here.
Did they ban the branded packaging yet?

Smoking won't affect general fitness too much when you're no chain smoker and young. It will affect fitness more after a certain age.

A lot of professional football players smoke, apparently without too much trouble. I don't think a lot of pro cyclists do it though.

I don't smoke. In summer, it sometimes is appealing, standing outside with friends having a cigarette. In winter, it isn't.

Smoking is great for cycling, running, and any cardio workout. I try not to smoke when I am not working out but when I get ready to go on a ride or run I usually smoke cig’s to enhance my performance. Smoke helps you take in oxygen and can will never do any long term harm to your lungs or heart.

As a matter of fact my body craves the smoke. Sometimes when I can’t afford cig’s I just go out to the smoking area here at my office and inhale the smoke. I also love the way these cig’s make me look around friends. I feel really cool, not near as cool as I feel when I am doing crack or meth with my buds but very close.

If you really want to get the effects of smoking you should try it during the activity either on a ride or running. Other cyclist and runners do not mind the smell either, they may not like the way it looks but they cannot deny the benefits of the smoke in their performance.

I don't think that smoking is that negative here in Australia.

Yes it is frowned upon by some, buts lot of people do it.

I guess we do have increasing things imposed to reduce smoking, but lots of people still smoke here.

You don't slow down? Odd.

I used to be able to run 5k in 18 minutes sharp, but 10k would take me a "little" longer than 36 minutes :). What are you? Some kind of android?

Not a smoker by the way.

I smoke cigarettes sadly... Used to be clean, but my girlfriend is quite a big smoker, and she got me hooked. After all the resiting I did vis-a-vis friends during high school, I could not resist the wily charms of a woman as an adult. Still pretty limited though, maybe two per day on average.

Well I am fast first, then android. Last 5km 18.40, last 10km 36.39, maybe time chip was fried who knows, and it depends on course tipe. It is not so big difference between 5 and 10km.

P.S. Try to smoke;) and you will be fast as I:eek:

Never have, and don't think I'll ever start; I've never had an interest. My mom smokes and for some reason, it deterred me despite rampant peer pressure from middle school friends. People always told me kids with smoking parent were more likely to start, don't know if it's true. My mom always went outside on the porch and doesn't smoke in car her either, so I'm pretty sensitive to it in bars or any enclosed spaces. Still can't date a smoker; tried a couple times and it grossed me out. Fortunately, my fiance has never smoked either.

Yes you are correct with telling them to try smoking, my marathon time dropped 20 minutes when I upped my cig intake. I went from 2 packs of camels non filtered to 3 1/2 packs a day. Then Boom my next marathon was off the chains fast. I would smoke more but sadly I cannot afford it. I lost my last job because they said I took to many smoke breaks during the day. Complete bull bleep
