Some will argue otherwise, but it seems fairly clear who the best sprinter is these days. But who is second best?

(This is about who is the best in a bunch sprint, with equivalent team mates. Not who can get over the mountains best or go well on the cobbles).

Obviously Farrar

After that Greipel in 3rd

You should have made the poll open to seeing who votes for who

I didn't know I had that option, I'm afraid. It took me a bit of time to work out the poll.

I'd like to see how Greipel does against the big guns before commenting on him. Farrar looks best for second but he's not far ahead of the rest.

edit: severe lack of Freire.

Freire is a great sprinter, and one of the most tactically astute in the peloton, but he's lost some of his raw speed and the ability to dominate a race that guys like Farrar and Greipel display nowadays. He's absolutely one of the top sprinters of the past decade, though.

I think Farrar is the best of the rest, he's fast and he's consistent. Greipel is a very close third.

Oh, absolutely. I wouldn't vote for him, but I'd say he deserves a spot in the poll.

Yeah. I forgot him. I'll admit that. But he doesn't really seem to bother these days unless it's MSR or the Worlds. So that's probably why I forgot him.

I thought this was about Greipel why is Cav not an option?

No but seriously....I can't say whether Cav is better than Greipel or not until they clash. Greipel usually wins in weaker competition but he absolutely toyed with everyone at the Vuelta last year against a field similar to what Cav is facing right now.

It's like if Federer never played against Nadal...how can we for sure know who's the best if they never meet each other? Or two dominant boxers or something like that...

I feel Greipel is a bit underrated just because he hasn't been a part of the TDF-mania. He also tends to choke quite bit sometimes but when he's on he's on.

Looking forward to next year.

Have another look at the options. Particularly the penultimate one.

(Personally I think Greipel is hopelessly overrated and can't hack it against a top notch field. Without HTC I think he'll go missing in most sprints. But that's just me. Not the facts).

C'mon man. No way Greipel can beat Cav in a straight flat finish.

I would like to wait till next season with my decision.
The decision who is Nr.1 - and then I will think about who is 2nd.

But for now. Hmmmh. Hard to handle this Cav-Greipel comparing.
I just leave Greipel out for now because there is no real competion between them.

1. Cav

2. Petacchi

HTC seem to have come to a fairly comprehensive decision.

It's hard to separate Farrar and Greipel. Farrar is arguably faster than Greipel but I think Greipel is better at positioning and timing his sprint without a leadout train so it all comes down to what aspect of sprinting you highlight most when deciding what makes a good sprinter.

Ben Swift. Because as we all know coming from Rotherham all but guarantees you invincibility in your chosen field.

I posted Farrar. Had he not busted his wrist at the TDF, there's no way that he wouldn't have racked up at least 1 Tour stage. Even with a screwy wrist, he got a handful of 2nds and 3rds.

I think he could. Next year in the sprints at tdf we will see. I think cav will take most but Greipel will take 1 or 2. I hope Greipel gets a good leadout.

So if Cav wins 5 and Greipel takes 2 that would make Greipel a better sprinter? :) (And i was kind with that 2 wins...)
