Whilst Evans is understandably the favorite for the tour now that Contador has been banned many people have placed Bradley Wiggins as the man who has the next best chance of winning the tour.
A GC rider with no pedigree asides from a 4th place in 2009 and a 3rd in the 2011 Vuelta against a relatively weak field, now considered to be as much a the second favorite behind cuddles and alongside Menchov? How could he ever hope to beat last year's tour winner?
Evidently the only hope for Wiggins to attain any sort of success is against the clock. Indeed he certainly is a truly outstanding time triallist with a silver in last year's world champs. Yet will his time trialling match up to that of Evan's and Menchov two riders who have proven they have the goods to time trial to GT victory.
Bradley showed with his world silver, his Grenoble second amongst various other top time trial results such as beating Cancellara in Bayern-Rundefhart that he is a top time triallist but in GT's his pedigree isn't as great as those of Evans and Menchov.
Evans came only 6 seconds from beating the unbeatable German powerhouse Tony Martin in the tour and if he can produce such a perfomance next year he will surely have the edge over Bradley.
Menchov meanwhile has consistently performed well in TT's from winning in the Giro 2009 to blasting his way to second spot in the tour in 2010 yet in 2011 his perfomances were regularly disappointing especially in the TT.

So who do you think will win the battle of the time triallists (GC) in this years tour?

When on form (which you'd use as a marker at le tour) wiggins will gain time on both
Indeed yes but you have to take into consideration the effects of a GT and who will be able to recover the best and have the most left in the tank.
Both Evans & Menchov have shown that they have what it takes to do that, whilst Wiggins though the superior time triallist has never truly sparkled when it comes to TTs in GTs

I find myself unable to make neutral judgements in these types of threads.

Why? IMO it's easy. If the question would stand Menchov vs Evans, even though i have no idea who will be better, i would surely have voted against Menchov. But the poll includes Wiggins who i'm sure is a better tter than the other two, so my judgement remains neutral

Menchov for me. Then Evans and then Wiggins. Forget the prologue. The 1st ITT will be tough and I expect Wiggins to to do OK but not much in it between said three. The second ITT, this is the one and this is where I can see Menchov making it. Wiggins has yet to impress in a third week of a GT whilst we all know Menchov and Evans can thrive. Oh and all three will be chasing podium 2 and 3;)

It can happen, but I struggle to see how Evans will shake Wiggins in any of the mountain stages that really matter. I think they will sit in each others wheels and hope for the best in the final TT.
If Radioshack manage to animate the race as they promise (something which actually seems highly likely) then it may be everyman for himself and imo only Cadel on the evidence of last years tour will be able to keep to Andy, so Wiggins will be dropped in the process.
Still can only dream of a Wiggins win, but it would make the olympics utterly boring, what could match up to a Briton winning the tour?

Cadel will not be able to keep up with Andy uphill, not if Andy goes full on that is. As 2010 showed Andy is a superior climber and aint nothing anyone present in the 2010 Tour can do about that.

Of course if Radioshack merely set a high pace then Cadel will struggle less than others, though I also expect Sanchez Gesink VDB Nibali to manage very well.

well...Wiggins had Evans over last years TDF TT course at the Dauphine. And yes his pedigree certainly isn't up there with Evans, or even Menchov...but honestly pedigree counts for little....age, form, the competition....until last year Evans was perennial runner up at best....Menchov's day has passed I think, as last year seems to suggest. Evans is definitely the favourite but I think Wiggins has a real chance to challenge him. As climbers I think on their day they are pretty similar in style and ability...diesels rather than mountain gazelles...and there certainly isn't much between them against the clock.

Of course Andy would drop Cadel, and Wiggins for that matter on any given day. But he will need to do it on multiple days, if he wants to make up the time he will lose on the TT's. Given his past form, and his inherent cagines, I don't see him being able to put a minute plus into them on two days...

Having said that, he may have learnt from last year, where he was monumentally complacent in thinking he was safe just dropping evans once...and Bruyneel certainly will try and encourage him not to be so cautious, but I think Porte, Froome and Uran will be doing the pacesetting for Brad...TTing their way up as many of the climbs as they can, trying to take the intiative and negate The Shack boys...hence their new nickname "UKpostal"

There's a time and a place for big dramatic post intros - this isn't it.

Sorry but just couldn't resist, just seemed like the best way.
Though it wasn't an imitation as wasn't on this forum till recently

GT itts are a completely different beast then 1 day itts like the worlds or itts on 1 week long races as recovery comes into play after so many days. i think wiggins will the faster of the 3 on the first long itt but the slowest on the last itt where it will be a close battle btw evans and menchov imo.

I think Wiggins is best in the prologue. Menchov will be the best on the hilly TT, and on the flat it will be Menchov again simply because it is late in the race and Menchov recovers like a beast.
