Who will win the Vélo d'Or

03272868.jpg.h380.jpg.568.jpg

Will it be Tom Boonen: winner of the 4 big cobbled classics? If that wasn't enough he won the National Championships with an impressive showing. He has broken a rib at the Tour de Pologne, but can he still recover in time to become an Olympic champion?

Or will it be Bradley Wiggins? Without accidents he'll make it in yellow to Paris. If that wasn't enough he also won 3 WT stage races. Will he be able to become an Olympic champion in the time trial after his (almost) inevitable Tour victory?

Joaquim Rodriguez had a good season so far: winner of Flèche Wallonne and second overall in the Giro d'Italia plus 2 stage victories. But I'm afraid he has come second too much this season to have a shot at this year's Vélo d'Or. He will need an incredible second half of the season to stay in the running.

Or will it be Peter Sagan, cycling's biggest talent? Without accidents he will take the green jersey(and a porsche) home. What else can he win this season? The Olympic road race? The World Championships in Valkenburg? Only time will tell, but he looks to be unstoppable for now.

Gotta be Wiggins if wins the Tour + win a medal in TT.

You can argue how he won it, but he did :

Paris Nice, Romandie, Dauphine, Tour.

He'll be top rider in WT ranking and CQ ranking too I think looking at it now - and that helps.

As of right now, I figure Wiggins is the favorite, having won three stage races already (Paris-Nice, Romandie and Dauphine) and well on his way to winning a fourth. I'd like to see him win a one-day race as well, but given that the only rider to win both a one-day race and a stage race, with both on the WorldTour calendar, is Simon Gerrans. Alas, I don't think too many people give him much of a chance to win Velo d'Or.

Boonen can still win the Eneco Tour if he rides well. :p

Sorry guys, but don't you forget a italian guy who came 1th @Tirreno-Adriatico, 3th @Sanremo, 2th @Liege, probably 3th @Paris? If he get the podium @Lombardia it will be a historic season, i mean, 3 podiums in monuments and 1 in a gt, how many riders did such a season in the last 20 years?
So i guess
1 Wiggo if he win the Tour
2 Boonen (or Wiggo if he lose the Tour)
3 Nibali

and let we see what Froome can do @LaVuelta (I don't think i'll win, but who knows?)

Frankly, also, if Purito can win the Vuelta on a course that suits him tremendously, I think he has a shot as well.

One more question...say Contador wins Eneco, Vuelta, Worlds, and Il Lombardia...one wonders if he'd be able to poke his head into this conversation.

Voted for Wiggins. ATM it looks like he will win le Tour (plus medal at Olympic's TT). Also IIRC, he'll be the first rider to win Paris-Nice, Romandie, Dauphine and Tour.
Boonen might come close if he wins Olympics, but right now it doesn't look too good with broken ribs.
Second at Giro and Pais Vasco and FW victory just aren't enogh for Rodriguez to take it. Not even with Vuelta victory.
Sagan might have many victories, but these aren't in the same rank with Boonen's and Wiggins' victories (only exception might be Tour stages). Only Olympics and WC double could put him into a competition, but I don't think he has any chance at WC, as IIRC it's (too) difficult course.

Wiggins I guess. Though this thread is a bit pointless before the olympics/worlds/Lombardia. Sagan can win all those three, or none. Of course the first is unlikely, but if he does it should win him the prize.

The thread would be pointless if I did it a week before the award ceremony when we all know who will win.

Voted Boonen,as much for the manner of his wins.If Wiggins or Sagan won I wouldnt think it was a travesty though.
Outside of those 3 no one(yep Jrod/Nibbles great seasons)as wins mean soooooo much more than having more podiums.

Here's a thing...if and when Wiggo wins on Sunday and if he wins the Olympics ITT, which you would have to say is very likely, never mind this season, when was the last time anybody had a better season?

Yellow, 2 stage wins in the Tour, P-N, Dauphine, Romandie, 4 stage wins in those WT events, Olympic ITT. Boonen 2005 close? You might have to go back to Pantani 1998.

Some guy called Gilbert had a decent season last year.

Wiggins V Boonen....

Difficult to choose as so far they have both achieved all of their primary aims they had at the start of this year...

It may very well come down to the Olympics, if Boonen doesnt win a medal then I would go for Wiggins who will unless something happens get a medal and has achieved more in terms of raw achievement though that is not really the focus of the award

You can say that about any rider, why specifically Contador?
