Will the hater threads explode on Cadel ?

Every time an athlete accomplishes something, he instantly gets beat down on forums. If any of the GC riders had won, we would see a rush of hate at them. Happens on the other sport I follow real bad.

Cadel used his brain against the climbing prowess of the schlecks. gutted them in the TT. Never missed a move. And when his team failed him, he took control. Won a mountain stage and never complained. His road to the yellow has been long and winding and this was his year.

Since you are Colombian and Ryo has strangely been absent since he made a number of assurances regarding Cadels descending skills, ascending skills, tt skills and his ability to get out of bed in the morning, I would like to present this gem from Colombias main broadsheet -El Tiempo

Rough Translation - Today not many will care that Evans won the Tour without attacking, on totaly deffensive mode, saving his energy and thinking only of the time trial where he destroyed the time of the brothers Schleck. This type of victory also counts.

Presumably some sarcasm there:D

Looks like the home of attacking cycling isnt too happy with Cadels victory

lol how can a picture of Mr Bean doing a Contador impression not have been used on this forum before.

Its truly mind-boggling.

Hope you dont mind Timmy if i use this one in the future.

PS please mods dont lock this thread. It has potential even if not in the way the op intended.

LOL.:D

Ryo lost a bet and now he has to put an Andy Schleck avatar. He must be frightened.

Maybe the translation was not the best but they actually tried to give some props to the victory. I am not sure if people got the message.

You have not been reading too closely for the past 24 hours. The reaction started after the time trial which was no surprise. It happens every year no matter who wins. Either the win was not deserved, they doped etc etc.........All I can say is I enjoyed the race.

@thehitch Locking this thread whilst there are no controversial " comments " would be an injustice !
Seems the "tall poppy syndrome" is alive and thriving on the other threads !

Can we keep this thread as commentary on skills and intelligent sportsmanship , since i feel sure Cadel was trying to help Thoma when he lost his temper on Thursday about Voeckler not pulling his weight to preserve his Yellow Shirt !

I have never been a fan of Cadel, but could not be more pleased for him winning the tour. He fought hard for this and deserves it.:)

if dragging everyone up the Galibier like a Lamborghini tractor in stage 18 wasn't winning, then nothing is.

Who did you expect to work for him? Basso Cunego Contador and Samu were way down on gc, in the case of the last 2 had no energy left anyway, and Frank Schleck just isnt going to work to bring back his teammate (youd think Cadel fans would have learnt that from Monte Grappa 2010). Tommy Voeckler is no mountain goat and could do nothing else but to hang on.

Cadel was the only person to whom Andy Schleck was a threat. Why should anyone else help him in his own private battle?

If Cadel attacked and found himself with the poursuivants from the breakaway it seems to me some fans here would be shouting at their screens, furious that Jeremy Roy and Andrey Zeits arent helping Cadel bring back his opponents.

They were a couple of guys that were expected to help the cause, but they were having a bad day: Contador and Sanchez. Rolland could have helped too, since he found himself in the hunt for the white jersey, but Voeckler's wanting to be in yellow one more day, prevented this.

Kudos to Cadel for winning the Tour in this very stage. Remarkable!

Evans is, like most people who have abrasive, awkward personalities, and like most people who are very successful, a guy who divides the audience.

We've dealt with Cuddles haters and Cuddles fanboyism for years here. I don't see how him finally winning the big one is going to change that. We might just deal with it being a bit stronger for a few weeks while the fans are in triumphant mode and the haters are gnashing their teeth.

Well he won many people over with his WC victory, his riding in support of Gilbert at the late season classics and then his stage win challenging conditions at the 2010 Giro. His winning the Tour finally after many people doubted that he ever would, including myself, should win many more people over or at least lessen the criticism. I'm still not a fan but I do respect him more than I have in the past.

A great deal of the supposed so-called hate isn't necessarily for the rider, but for the over-zealous posters that seem to worship at his alter.

This is very true. Most people who are hating on Cadel are now either doing so in exasperation at the over-zealous fandom, winding up said over-zealous fans, or people who just haven't watched him for the last couple of years.

However, when I commented on said over-zealous posters, I was reprimanded by Sportzchick because apparently everything's been anti-Cadel for years. I hadn't detected that.

The question though, is are the Cadel fans over-defensive because he takes too much flak, or does he take too much flak because his fans are over-defensive?

Certainly Evans has been brought up many times in threads he is irrelevant to, but the same can be said of many riders with strong support on the boards. I can accept that a Cuddles fan showing up after the whole Cuddles fan/Cuddles hater thing going on might perceive there being a lot of hate, but certainly for me, I find that the fans' egregiousness is the only thing I dislike Evans for (I don't dislike Evans anyway).

Being the sportsman that he is , i am sure that Cadel was aware that Thoma needed to make the extra effort to stay in contention for the Podium ! Seeing Andy up the road with a time difference he probably had done the sums and felt that Voeckler needed to chase the break to preserve his chances with the Maillot jeune until the ITT !

Voeckler missing the Podium was a great disappointment for the FRench !

Now back in Austria "dr m." and " resting "!

Indeed, I wonder what the reaction would have been if the Schleck's had held on. Pretty much every rider gets flak on the forums but it seems that the most sensitive to criticism are: Armstrong fans, Cuddles fans, Contador fans and Cavendish fans. All as you say are polarising figures.

IMO a lot of the flak Cuddles gets is because of i) the media who tend to ram him and any other english speaker down our throats and ii) the sensitivity of Cuddles fans and his previous riding style.

He's still f-ugly on a bike. Someone once described his riding style as a 'chimp humping a football'.

Have to agree with a lot of that, when this forum started, Evans got a lot of grief for his riding style which his fanboys were ultra defensive about which definitely made people dislike him more. However since he won the worlds, there has been a definite change in attitude towards him on here because of his new found aggressive style.

The problem is this, too many of his fanboys hark back to the days when he did get grief conveniently ignoring the respect he has got since Worlds 2009. As some of his biggest fans seem to be July only types, they see to have missed the change in attitude towards him.

I know I never hated Cadel but his fans definitely made me cheer for others, I would have been totally happy to see him win the Tour if it hadnt been for his fanboys. I tipped him to win after the Pyrenees and now I will take the time to finally wish him well.

Congratulations to Cadel on winning the Tour, he was ubdoubtedly the best rider there even if Contador was the big animator for me. BTW, does anyone else think ACF94 and Spotzchick would make a cute couple.

indeed one wonders if they ever stopped. many here seem hellbent on turning EVERY thread into a cadel hater thread. ;)

hard to justify tho...since he is frickin' awesome!

This! This thread is kind of asking for the haters to come out and play.

Many of his former critics seems to think like this, so yet again, why start this thread? Do you never read what prople writes no this forum?

Sure, it could happen but why encourage them to do so but making threads like this?
