World Championship 2023: Men’s TT (August 10)

The last of the TTs. It’s mostly the same route as the U23 and women’s version (see the thread of the latter for more detail on the shared portion), only instead of taking the narrow, twisty B8031 they detour on wider, straighter roads via Thornhill. So even better for the powerhouses.

Also, there are 78 starters. This one is going to take a while.

He's a contender for the medal definitely but the Jumbo setup has been underwhelming on the flat-ish TTs so far this season (their two big TT victories were on mountainous TTs).
True. But us that their setup or a combination of Roglic not being best itt’er anymore and Wout not happening into any flat ITTs when he was in peak condition?

Vingegaard did fine in Dauphine and won in Camino(Not the strongest field) with Dennis 2nd. And also went quite fast on the flat sections in the Tour.

Maybe a combination? I do think Roglic's TT level hasn't been at its peak since his injuries last year. As for Wout, yes, he hasn't been in peak condition in most of his TTs. He did win the Belgian TT but hard to gauge how good that performance was because Remco crashed. However, I must admit I was surprised at how Vingegaard and Pogacar dominated him in the flat-ish first 16 km of the Tour TT.

As for Vingegaard, well he's Vingegaard and he's just a freaking beast on the TT bike, especially in June/July. That's all I can say with regards to him lol.

Vingegaard hasn't changed anything about his TT setup since last year. Van Aert has. That might be the difference.

Yeah, could be a combination that is often the case.

I do think it makes sense that Wout and other heavier riders and their extra kg needed to pace themselves more on the first flat section of the tdf itt. The same way Ciccone could beat Vingegaard on the climb because he only went deep there. Vingegaard and pogi could set their effort to like 80 where Wout had to go with around 70.

Then there is the overall volume of time on the day, that sticks out for sure and that is indeed all we can say about that.

Thanks I didn’t know that. I still reckon it is likely that Wout just haven’t done any flat itt this year when he was really on peak form.
He still finished well enough in TdS ITTs if you compare them to his level on the regular stages in the race.

maybe that is also going to be a problem. That he hasn’t gone full gas on a tt bike that often this year, paired with new setup.

Van Aert is a certainty on this course.
Van Aert is a certainty for silver, but behind whom?

In theory Ganna should be top favorite, but the transition from track to road is far from obvious. Last year he disappointed at the WC when he was focusing on the world hour record.

These are the previous medals of today's participants:

Ganna: gold, gold, bronze
Dennis: gold, gold
Foss: gold
Van Aert: silver, silver
Evenepoel: silver, bronze, bronze
Küng: silver, bronze

1. Remco Evenepoel
2. Filippo Ganna
3. Wout van Aert
4. Stefan Küng
5. Geraint Thomas
6. Joshua Tarling
7. Tobias Foss
8. Kasper Asgreen
9. Mattia Cattaneo
10. Tadej Pogacar

Of course there's also Bissegger, Dennis, NcNulty, Bjerg, Cavagna, Almeida....
