Actually, reading all the reactions from both Ineos guys and the favorites caught unaware. It wasn't really that much of a planned move.
They weren't even trying to create echelons or anything. They were just told by Knaven to move up because it's a potentially dangerous zone.
From the 2nd group, they said the pace wasn't even that high and the peloton wasn't put to one side like you would expect with echelons. But suddenly there was a large split. And by the time everyone realized what had happened, the gap was already big. And then Ineos started really hammering it.
By any means, the more reactions I read about it the more it seems it was a 'lucky' break and Ineos just fully capitalized on it.
