    Ryder Hesjedal Discussion Thread

I remember him saying not too long ago that the plan for his focus races this year was Giro, TdF, Olympics, Canadian races (Quebec, Montreal). I wonder if it will change now after this and he goes for the Vuelta... or stick with Quebec/Montreal.

Ryder put his Stage 7 pink jersey (signed) on ebay with all proceeds going to his charity to support cycling in Canada. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ryder-Hesjedals-Giro-dItalia-Stage-7-Podium-Jersey-Autographed-/180903573215?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a1eb176df. It went up last night...

I do enjoy this cartoon! From the Province. For those non hockey fans, that is the Stanley Cup (National Hockey League). link: http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Sports+cartoons+from+Krieger/2926089/story.html?id=2926089

    Ryder Hesjedal Discussion Thread

Well in Victoria anyway he's getting a ton of attention, and actually gets quite a bit of local media attention for most of his other racing as well. He's a definite 'household' name I would say here even before the Giro, I have yet to know someone who doesn't know who he is at the very least...

    This weekends Canadian Races

Awesome to see Hesj putting on a show for the home crowds! What a competitor. Nice move by Voeckler though! Looking forward to Sunday, great racing today and Sunday should see more fireworks than today.

What language is Ryder Hesjedal speaking?

That's how everyone here talks. Pretty standard West Coast speech.

    TDF Stage 19 - Saturday, July 24 2010, Bordeaux - Pauillac, 51 km ITT

Well actually, as some have pointed out, 2008 his first TdF he was 14th in the ITT, and 16th at the Olympics. Last years TdF ITT he was 43rd, and this year not quite top 50. Doesn't seem like he has suddenly learned how to TT.

    Ryder Hesjedal - GC Chances

I could see him possibly getting in yellow in the first mountain stages. It wouldn't last, but if he's on form he could find himself in the top 10 by Paris. The only issue is that the only chance I see him getting any significant time would be in a breakaway (likely on a mountain stage), but...

    Peak Performance

Measuring performance by percentages is always difficult and tricky, I used them as an example of 100% being the athletes optimal performance but of course that will increase as the season increases, and hopefully will increase year-to-year as an athlete matures. An athlete will always do...

    Peak Performance

In most sports and training programs, you have a structured training pattern (often organized into weeks but not always) that progressively gets more difficult and intense, followed by a short, less intense recovery period. The cycle is repeated, usually with an increase in work. For example, a...

    Efficacy of reconnaissance

I'm no cyclist but I would imagine that getting at least somewhat familiar would be a tremendous advantage, at the very least a psychological one if not a practical one. Even as a rower we like to get as much time on the water of a new course as possible... and there's even less variables as...

    explaining bike racing to outsiders?

I find the hardest parts to explain are that not all 180 riders are trying to win, in fact only a small handful are actually there to win the race. People find that hard to grasp, so I of course explain the teams and how the teams work. And then having to explain that riders aren't employees...

    The lowest form of treachery.

Im not a cyclist but as an athlete that has travelled a lot, those stomach bugs are VERY common on the road and can be pretty treacherous. I'm sure they are used as a cover for someone with other motives sometimes, but I don't doubt that it happens as frequently as it seems to.

    Liege - Bastogne - Liege

I have to miss it this weekend, too bad, but can't catch them all. Could go any way as many have pointed out, I see maybe Cunego getting it done although I'd be happy to see Gilbert again! Personal favourite: Hesjedal, BC boy for the win!!!
