Continental praise
Hey what a great thread. I ride Continental Ultra 4000 and GatorSkin on my two commuters. The Black Chili compound wears much better than the colored GP 4000s I've had in the past. In fact I am about 300 miles in and even the back looks brand new!
Thanks for all the feedback!
There are lots of great ideas here. It does seem that pulling up on the pedals kinda messes up my pedal stroke, but naturally I go to the "scraping gum off of my shoe" feeling in my pedal stroke. I feel that this doesn't rob me of much power at all but at the...
The first thing I noticed when I started using clipless pedals is that you can push and pull the pedals with your feet/legs.
I also have heard of the terms "pedaling squares" and "pedaling circles". I assume that pedaling squares means that you only push and don't pull with your feet.

I came upon a guy in full Astana kit coming across the Golden Gate Bridge. I looked at his bike and noticed it was a Giant, not a Trek. Clearly not on the team.
Anybody get the bikes to match their outfit? One of those Liquigas Cannondales would be sweet.
As for wearing team kit, do others...
+1 on the SRAM lever shape. I had no experience with them until I was hanging out in the main tent before Tour of California in 2008 and one of the exhibitors let me touch his personal bike. I was amazed how nicely the hood nestled in my hand. I resolved that I had to get a SRAM group on my next...
With all the post-tour sniping between Contador and Armstrong, let's try and focus on something positive.
George Hincapie rode four stages with a broken collarbone!!
Truly one of the hard men of cycling. I am applauding right now.
Any others?
Here's an impartial breakdown.
Steel Trek 610. Reynolds 531 lugged steel frame. This is the nicest steel frame that I have ridden, but it still feels kinda slow and deliberate, even when going 22 mph on the flats.
Cheapo $69 ebay aluminum frame. Really light, and good with carbon forks. It...
Indeed, I am very fortunate. I even got to volunteer for the Tour of California the past two years.
Plenty of bike lanes in the Bay Area, some good (but not high in altitude) climbs, and a Mediterranean climate. Happy to be a born Californian.
Two good rides here in San Francisco.
I always go over the Golden Gate Bridge and ride the Marin Headlands up a road called Conzelman Road. It is very scenic with a nice climb and a steep dropoff on the ocean side, a loop past former coastal gun batteries (WW II), then another climb and...

Cool, it looks like it is time for a new tool (10mm hex wrench).
I didn't even think about replacing bearings, or cleaning out what was making the freehub crunchy. You gotta respect your commuter cause that's what gets the bills paid.
Thanks for the help and suggestions fellow cyclists. :)
