Study claims that EPO does not increase cyclists performance

Quote from link: ""Athletes and their medical staff may believe EPO enhances performance, but there is no evidence that anyone performed good experiments to check if EPO would actually improve performance in elite cyclists," says lead researcher Professor Adam Cohen, who works at the Centre for...

    Vomit bag please

Quick!!! Someone come with the vomit bag! I can't take it anymore: "For years, sensational stories based on the allegations of ax-grinders -- have surfaced on the eve of the Tour for publicity reasons, and this article is simply no different," Armstrong said. "Lastly, I have too much work...

Blood doped. What can I expect?

This must be the study at the Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre. ;) Have fun and enjoy it while you can. Give them some good data!

    Announcing James Dark Mountain Ph.D

Meant in no disrespect. ;) Merely a poke at the amusing google-mistranslation of his name that also was used in the press when the story about Jakob's comments concerning Lance's blood values came out.

    Announcing James Dark Mountain Ph.D

Hi Swordsman, Certainly no "tone" intended. Jakob Mørkeberg is a serious and dedicated scientist and yes, I think this is very good news for clean cycling. The dissertation is in English and is available as a pdf. I think it is posted somewhere on the Copenhagen University site. I will...

    Announcing James Dark Mountain Ph.D

Yesterday James Dark Mountain (alias Jakob Mørkeberg) successfully defended his Ph.D entitled "Detection of Autologous Blood Transfusions via Analyses of Peripheral Blood Samples" at the University of Copenhagen. His opponents were some heavy hitters in the anti-doping physiology world...

New Wonder Drugs in Endurance Sports coming soon...

;) You will notice that I pointedly did NOT say "Biological Passport" but "blood profile". The much touted Biological Passport is, as everyone is clear on, based on the concept of monitoring blood profiles. I still believe strongly that blood profiles are a sound way to go, precisely because...

New Wonder Drugs in Endurance Sports coming soon...

Well this is the whole point of the blood profile approach. No need to test for individual drugs, or artificial EPO, or any future wonder drugs. The trick is to recognize the unnatural changes in the blood profile, not what might have caused it.

A thread that cuts to the chase and starts off with Lance.

Shameless and extravagant squandering of money which could be better used to...cure cancer, for example?

    The Uncanny Valley

I have from time to time pondered the phenomenon of the polarizing effect of Lance Armstrong. Last night a parallel occurred to me. Let me try it out on you all. There is a theory put forth in 1970 by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori that hold that the closer a robot comes to resembling...

    Lemond/Trek new thread

I have to agree that this might be a necessary purge. Painful and costly for cycling in the short term perhaps, but better than the current modus operendi.

Let's get Mørkebjerg and Belhage on the stand as well!!!

    Lemond/Trek new thread

Race Radio, is there a link to yesterday's proceedings that you refer to? I would love to follow this a bit more closely. And I would LOVE (!!!!) to see the circus of Armstrong in court trying to prove himself clean. Oooo this is going to be very entertaining!!:D

    Lemond/Trek new thread

One has to wonder if the judge could be experiencing pressure to encourage a settlement.

Additives that make a significant performance difference, but not doping

While I think saying that WADA is only interested in protecting athlete health is naive, I think the reality is that it is a combination of protecting the athlete and protecting the fairness of the sport. Many, if not most, of the doctors and scientists involved in antidoping work are motivated...
