We hope all of you have a great holiday season and wonderful Christmas. Thanks so much for being part of the Cycling News community in 2025 and beyond!
It was a way more exciting race that I thought it would be (happy the MvdP solo didn't stick). It was a shame he didn't wait for Del Grosso. I'm not sure they would've been that much better of because everybody would have looked at them and start attacking, but it would've made it an interesting...
If mvdp gets in the break by himself he will get worked over, I wonder if he manages to be there with some teammates, probably not. Somehow I can see Alaphillipe magically finding his legs and winning this one. Wouldn't mind that or a WvA win.
I remember the days of Erik Zabel and Mario Cippollini dominating the openingstages. I would read about them in the paper and then start watching when they reached the alps.
For sure Visma will try something with the Echelons, but normally it's impossible to surprise pogi with this I think. Barring machanicals they would mostly effect some lower tier GC riders. Let's indeed hope there will not be gc caps due to bad luck.
In the end the amount of stages in a tour, the amount of monuments, World titles or grand tour victories, its all apples and oranges. It's down to personal opinion, the very reason this forum exists. I do know I rate WvA 9 stages way more than Philipsens 10 stages though.
Who's gonna remember that? Instead he would have had a chance on a stage win. Ofcourse Pogi would have most likely won, but on a perfect day, mvdp would have had a chance. All his buddies of the first day's were there.
Mvdp absolutely tanked his chances yesterday. So much so that they're speculating in a Dutch podcast that maybe alpecin (if its in their power) should let the break go and hope he can follow pogacar to the finish line when there's no stagewin or boni's to win. That way at least he gets to wear...
It's far from a foregone conclusion that Mvdp wins this imo. His team is good for positioning him, but if this stage gets ridden hard, he is on his own. Then he needs to hope that a team (probably UAE) controls the race enough so he can win, without drilling every hill. A lot of ifs and buts.
