    How is it possible skinny legs more powerful than muscular legs

    I think it's a combination of things. The likes of Mark Cavendish at around 69kg is that he has a lot of power in those legs and with that power and so little weight, the power to weight ratio must be trough the roof. But look at him in the mountains, and he can't climb with the real climbers...

    How do you keep sane on your trainer?

    Try training with a Tacx i-magic Fortius trainer with real life video. It's great. It's winter and there is snow outside, but you can't beat climbing Alpe d'Huez in a pool of sweat. :) Seriously, it's the best way to train indoors.

    which exercises to prefer

    For me, it's all about strength. If you do a long endurance ride and feel weak, then you won't last long. If you have strength, then you will last longer and as a result your endurance increases. So it's simple, yes gradually increase your riding times on the bike, but work in some strength...

    Winter training - what do you combine with time on the bike?

    I'm currently doing a combination of indoor cycling (turbo) and circuit training for upper and lower body strength exercise. For the legs, I do alot of squats (currently 90kg) and machine leg curls, deadlifts, step ups, lunges and calf raises. I've felt I've come a long way since starting this...
