    Agreed. Arm-chair cyclists galore.

He isn’t obliged, and neither is Mathieu. Mathieu certainly isn’t pointing the finger at anyone, so it seems like Wout is more frustrated with himself than anybody else. Everyone knows that his season wouldn’t have been made or broken today, including Mathieu. I can understand that his choice...

    Gent - Wevelgem: October 11th, 2020

I do agree that Van Aert, already having won a lot his season, had less to lose than Van der Poel, who by his standards, hasn’t won as much. With that being said though, I wonder which rider or arm-chair cyclists on this forum would have wasted the last of his energies and surely “lost” in...

Poor guy. I would be the one up all night with an angry MVDP, though. The upcoming races are shaping up to be epic.

More like, Wout and Mathieu from CX can go deep for a long time, if that’s what you meant.

What a performance today by Mathieu. Deserved that win thoroughly. Managed to stay away from an elite group of riders after a lot of questions were being asked about his form this season. A true display of absolute courage and determination only to be admired and respected by true cycling fans...

Teams & Riders The "MVP" Mathieu Van der Poel Road Discussion Thread

While I agree that he was one of the strongest if not the strongest on that day I’d be careful about throwing words like “wins Flanders easy” around. It’s never easy to win a monument, and staying upright is part of the game. Moreover, who’s to say he would have followed Bettiol’s attack...

    Sprinters 2020

I’d love to see the interview where Mathieu said that Merlier was faster than him. Got the source? Afaik, Mathieu beat him once in 2018 at the Ronde van Limburg, albeit not a flat finish. Other than that the only visual evidence we have is the video recently posted where they went mano-a-mano...

I don’t think there’s sufficient evidence to conclude that Merlier is faster than MVDP. I also think that people tend to take that one win Trentin had vs MVDP and Van Aert as the sole metric to determine who is faster, ridiculous. Regarding Jakobsen, I think the raw speed is definitely there...

Maybe, or maybe it’s exactly because of the fact that such a feat is even possible in women’s cycling that one can gauge the degree of difficulty in achieving it vis-a-vis men’s cycling. I think Vos would have been able to achieve that feat as well had she taken mountain-biking seriously.

Teams & Riders The "MVP" Mathieu Van der Poel Road Discussion Thread

I don’t necessarily agree that women have to work harder in this context. It is exactly because of the hyper-specialization in men’s cycling that it is harder to achieve Mathieu’s feat. In women’s cycling if you are a talented rider you can more easily figure prominently in different cycling...

Simply the best Cyclocross rider after Mathieu and the only one able to challenge him on a good day. Those two are in a league of their own, then comes the rest. Multitalented beasts. Respect Wout.

Also nice to see Mathieu addressing the fact that he’s certain that he’s not a GT rider, that was more his grandfather’s thing. I mean, it was obvious for the people who have been following his career, and yet it still surprises me how many people genuinely think he can contest for the win in a...

Van Aert disappointed not to have finished on the podium. Rightly so too as it seems he had a puncture at a very unfortunate moment. Also taking into account that he had to come from behind. He was very strong today everything considered. Definitely on track for the road season. Disappointment...

Call it whatever you want to call it. A mistake, a noble attempt, a necessary attempt as a pro athlete, my point, in hindsight (which is always 20/20), is that it cost him the silver. I agree that it was the only thing to do as a pro athlete and all of that, so don’t get me wrong.
