I understand the price implications, don't worry about that. I also realise the frame itself isn't all that, hence the original post. I am still interested in finding out if my ideas are possible. Feasibility isn't really a top priority at the mo. :)

Following on from my previous post (http://forum.cyclingnews.com/showthread.php?t=6003), I have now received the bike. Currently it has a friction shift on the down tube. It is 5 gears, Sachs-Huret components. Can I change the shifter to a friction one? If so, what should I be looking for...

Also, I am wondering if I would be able to upgrade the gears - it looks like there's only one on the front, and I would like to put on a compact chainset if possible, and I would also like to increase the cassette size at the rear. Would either/both of those be possible to do?

Hi there Looks like I'll be getting a 'new' bike tomorrow, it's a Raleigh that was apparently originally purchased in 1986, and as far as I can make it, it is called 'Shadow'. This is what it looks like: & I am basically trying to find out as much info about the bike as possible...
