I think the issue here is the general shortage of big tour riders. There is a lot of talent in the sport, but the young cyclists are afraid to aim for multiple grand tours, even though they can do it. Plus riders generally ride less today. Nibbles will probably be the first rider to win a double...
Pantani was and always will be a legend. He rode in the old tradition, attaching relentlessly, you will not find many riders in the peleton who do that anymore. It has nothing to do with clinical issues, its just the style of riding
Crits are the too common here, even though there are so many open country roads. It seems like the issue is cost. The fact you have to pay law enforcement overtime for road marshalling. I don't know about MTB
Actually Europcar had the best tour, and not forget FDJ, but Pinot's phone must be ringing off the hook right about now :)
Euskaltel, Katusha were not in the Tour ( yeah I said it ) :D
Maybe the riders have contributed to the lack of excitement. It was only the most desperate riders that attacked in this tour to win stages, non of the favorites except Nibali tried. Last year was way too exciting than this year. We will forget this tour like that of Carlos Sastre :D
Why don't they just bring back the barachi trophy, since it can be contested by many countries: you need only two cyclists. smaller countries can be allowed an extra rider and have the race before the main TT.
nationalism is not the same as liking a cycling team or a cyclist from your own country. Cycling is an olympic sport anyways so nationalities have always played a role. What we should oppose though is prejudice and negative bias due to national origin.
So what are the possible destinations for the Radioshack crew should they disperse this year? :D
Maybe a small entourage of Cancellara to Saxo and other to Astana, Europcar and others
Froome is a master of pain :) but yeah he should have just kept a good tempo alongside Wiggins until the finish line. He should play his role and honor his obligation. Later in the Vuelta he will havehis chance to shine. There should be no regrets for him if he stays sharp and is able to come...
I haven't watched the bloody thing in days - actually about a week now. This is by far the most boring tour. Quite a lousy route
But the rolling stages might actually save it for being worse.
