La Flèche Wallonne 2026, 22nd April

Vauquelin can't really win this race in normal conditions (the two second places in the rain are a bit of a mirage). Seixas is the favourite, but Mur de Huy is a bit of a special type of effort where it is difficult to tell how well somone will do until you have seen it at least once. His...

Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

Maybe it is just that I personally evaluate the importance of these races differently. In my own ranking, Amstel and Fleche are Tier 1 classics (worth 15 points for the winner) and LBL as a monument is worth 30 points. So Amstel+Fleche together is for me equal to LBL. If the team or Evenepoel...

Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

Yes, maybe they think he only has a chance if he goes from far (and thus very deep), but I still don't think that would negatively impact his performance on Sunday. I have often seen riders do PB-level performances the very next day after going hard (including Evenepoel), not to mention 4 days...

Teams & Riders Tadej Pogačar discussion thread

PdB was indeed his best, but Peyragudes ITT, Combloux and Lombardia last year were not far off. The Isola stage was also not that hard. You can look in my climbers ranking thread were I analyzed all these performances. Heat is also not always the same. The PdB stage actually started with...

Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

Everyone has limitations, that does not mean he cannot win the race. My main criticism is that he is probably in the area anyways and will also do a hard training that day. So he might as well do the race. (Which was probably his personal plan, so here I am mainly criticising his team that does...

La Flèche Wallonne 2026, 22nd April

Besides the Tour de Suisse and the Tour de France, this is the one race missing from Roglic's palmares (in my opinion). I think he had the potential to be the best rider in history on the Mur de Huy. That he has not even won it once is a real shame. The crazy thing about Fleche is that I think...

Teams & Riders Tadej Pogačar discussion thread

If he does not do the Vuelta (now that he lost Roubaix and thus the chance of the 5 Monument season), this is the worst schedule in his career. He should never do a mimal schedule like that again while he is still in his prime. Progression for superstars in different sports are often similar...

Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

When his calendar came out originally my biggest criticism was not Flanders or MSR missing, but Fleche. It is ridiculous for a rider like Remco, who is focusing on the Ardennes, to skip this race. He will probably do a hard training on Wednesday anyway. I thought he had turned a corner after...

Teams & Riders Official Wout Van Aert thread

I agree with you on MvdP, we simply have not seen it with him. But I think you are underestimating van Aert a little, he has some really solid climbing performances and his level is not far from a rider like Dumoulin. Peak Van Aert probably could have won races like the 2011 Tour or the 2012...

Teams & Riders Official Wout Van Aert thread

With his E3 watts vdP could even podium the Tour this year, so it is not impossible. I think he or Ganna could have won the 2001 Tour de France if they had been in the break on stage 8. (This would depend on their degree of favouritism going into the race)

    Mancebo in the Pog era

Paco Mancebo was quite good especially in the 2004 Vuelta and 2005 Tour. With this level he could have probably podiumed in the 2021 and 2022 Tour de France. Top 10 would have been absolutely no problem for him in any year.

Teams & Riders Official Wout Van Aert thread

Ganna and MvdP should in theory have enough watts to compete back then, but their day-to-day recovery seems far below the standard of even your run-of-the-mill GC rider. And this problem may have even been aggravated by the lack of carbs back then, although as you said they have simply never...

Teams & Riders Official Wout Van Aert thread

Van Aert is possible/likely, but what have Ganna and MvdP ever shown in a GT? You would at least need to send their current gels back with them in time, because those did not really exist back then. Hesjedal was actually pretty good on Alpe di Pampeago in 2012, although the other performances...

Teams & Riders Official Wout Van Aert thread

In my own points-based ranking Wout van Aert finally cleared the minimum requirements to be ranked officially after his Roubaix win. In his typical style, he had been the first rider outside my official ranking for over a year now and just could not get by Julian Alaphilippe. Now he has finally...

    Comprehensive Climbers Ranking

Almeida if fit. Then I would also rate Pellizzari, Arensman and Gall higher. There are also several other riders I would rate similarly like Storer, Hindley, Carapaz, maybe Landa. Of course, if Yates returns to his 23/24 summer level he would be a podium favourite, but I have not seen an...
