What to do about sprint stages in stage races

    Bring back the prologue TT.

    Giro d'Italia 2021 Giro d'Italia, Stage 14: Cittadella – Monte Zoncolan 204 km

A lot of big passes scratched in that Giro; including the Giau cut from that stage. If we’re doing the easier side of the Zonc it’s a shame not to use it as a pass and extend the finale. Take the road up from Comeglians as far as Ravascletto or something like that.

Giro d'Italia Giro Stage 5: Modena – Cattolica 175 km

3km rule is meaningless if you crash bad enough to be out of the race. The /safest/ thing is to be chilling at the back and only be held up by crashes in front, then you’re @st no problems. But then the risk is a non crash split in the bunch... they’re big boys and can make that sporting decision.

Should the riders be allowed to ride without helmets on the MTFs?

The irony is that it's only at that those low speeds that a cycle helmet will be much protection.

    Cyclists in Etape Cymru challenge

Great, we can't get closed roads for any actual races but they'll be shut all day for a 'challenge ride' for anyone that will pay £65 and can manage 20kph for 160km. Fair enough.

Tour of Britain 2011- 11th-18th September

Sometimes it's simply a case of the route planners not knowing the areas intimately. Yesterday's stage could easily have been pretty awesome, there's a small road from Pontypridd to Caerphilly which is long and crazy steep, and would have been a perfect run-in before the final climb. But to be...

Tour of Britain 2011- 11th-18th September

I'd be surprised if it's as much as 20%, but it is consistently steep with some ramps. As bergs go it's quite a good one because it's regularly steep enough to have people struggling, then with a few kicks to let the stronger guys ride away. It's not a pure slog like Constitution Hill in...

    Stage 18 Pinerolo-Galibier

The gap came down almost immediately and pretty quickly once Evans committed to the chase. He had done a few turns before in the valley and on the lower slopes, but only rolling through to try to get a paceline going. Once it was clear noone would help then he got on with it and did a great job...

Official thread: Should descents be a factor in GC/ are Tour's descents too dangerous

+1 What an idiot. There are always excuses you can make for losing time, just say you had a slow puncture on your tub and had to back off, something like that, something that tells everyone you're not going to let it happen again. If you just come out and say you were scared, that's just an...

What in your mind makes for a great Tour de France?

Since we're starting in Liege next year they have to pay tribute to La Doyenne on the first weekend. Personally I would then hope for a route like this with a quick dive down to the Black Forest and Vosges area and some proper medium mountains in the middle of the first week to settle the nerves...

    The Lone Break is DEAD

Well it sort of did happen in last year's Giro, and also in the Tour 2006, where long breakaways put non-favourites in the lead right up until the final days. People will always miscalculate, or every team will try to leave it up to the others until it's too late. In terms of lone breaks...

Basso totally out of form, will he be able do something in the tour?

Basso is the guy that can bring something different so he's the only one that has a chance to beat Contador/Schleck. There are a few stages here, especially the Tourmalet and Izoard stages, that will suit the Liquigas style of long sustained pressure. Szmyd will need to be phenomenal to put...

    Shaving

:p This stuff is funny. Why do cyclists shave their legs? Just look at anyone in cycling shorts with hairy legs and you have your answer, it looks hideous. Pro cyclists originally shaved their legs because they were told to by their sponsors so they looked presentable. Maybe it's faster, more...

Giro 2012: Route Rumours / Our wishes

:) This was the big surprise I got when we toured around Italy a few years ago, there are just mountains and hills almost everywhere you go. This is both the great strength and great weakness of the Giro - you don't get the natural formula that the TdF has largely defined for it by the...
