Re: Resistance isn't the same as watts. Resistance is the force you're pushing against. Power is the amount of energy per second you're putting out. So, this is all about the resistance. The statement here is that it is different to put out 200 Watts against a 100 Newton resistance force...

Re: In addition to the way it is explained in the article, think of it this way. When you're going fast on a flat road putting out P watts of power, the amount of force working against you to keep you from going faster is actually quite small. Power = Force * Velocity...so for a given power...

    2015 USA Pro Challenge (2.HC), Aug. 17-Aug. 23.

Evans is never pitchy...it's a long evil drag for sure, but I'm not sure it would make for better racing that we've seen. It's also so high I suspect these guys would be afraid to go into the red to attack for fear they will never recover. VDV has said that over and over on the USAPC broadcast...

    2015 USA Pro Challenge (2.HC), Aug. 17-Aug. 23.

A couple other short sharp climbs do exist around the Boulder/Denver area too...an MTF on these might be interesting racing. I suspect they wouldn't ever be used due to remoteness etc. I'd like the see the organizers take a risk and try them though... https://www.strava.com/segments/663988...

Team Ineos (Formerly the Sky thread)

Re: This sort of argument (on both sides of it) I think leads naturally to the position I have been personally considering for a while now. Transparency is a very tricky thing to achieve. In actual fact, I think it is never truly achieved. Even if people actually are clean, you can't 100%...

Team Ineos (Formerly the Sky thread)

FWIW, on two recent solo climbs I have done I measure 16% and 17% of power being put into non-gravity work on climbs of 5% and 4.5% at higher altitudes. Given how much slower I am as compared to a TdF contender, 20% seems quite possible if they are climbing on their own and not drafting.

Teams & Riders Froome Talk Only

Re: That's not how the correction would work. If it were 3% for one-crank-arm Stages it would still be 3% for two-crank-arm Stages. For the one-arm they are multiplying it by 2 already...and multiplying a 3% error by 2 is still a 3% error.

Teams & Riders Froome Talk Only

Crank-based power meters with non-round chainrings have indeed been shown to measure incorrectly high due to the way they have to average torque vs. how they average rotational speed of the crank. The effect has been measured previously as a 3-4% effect for Quarq...

The Sky-Con-O-Meter. Predictions on how much more ridiculous they can get

Because I'm a nerd and clearly have nothing better to do... Some TdF riders have posted their rides to Strava for today with power (some of them with HR as well). Picking their weights from the TdF site and doing a little arithmetic for the final climb... Gesink: 409W/68kg = 6.01 W/kg ten...

The Sky-Con-O-Meter. Predictions on how much more ridiculous they can get

Possibly of interest since Gesink's performance is one of the benchmarks to compare with today...he's on Strava. https://www.strava.com/activities/345923267/analysis/13211/15599 409W average shown there for his climb.

The Sky-Con-O-Meter. Predictions on how much more ridiculous they can get

Re: Re: Fair point...although it'd be interesting to at least try it and see. I do think there's a fair chance that it'd even the playing field at least somewhat. The only thing we lose is the drama of wondering who is going to get busted this year.

The Sky-Con-O-Meter. Predictions on how much more ridiculous they can get

Long time reader...first time poster because I had a thought today that I don't think I've seen mentioned yet. FWIW, I'm one of those heretics who thinks they should just allow doping openly...but that's a whole other discussion. Anyway, it's a totally silly thought but I wonder if Sky broke...
