No problem! I view Remco the way I view soccer: I want to be a fan, I try to be a fan, I can occasionally get caught up in the moment, but I just can’t seem to get all the way there.
The part are more take issue is with the team dynamics. Coming in and taking the former team leader’s spot as top dog and preventing him from riding the Tour just is what it is, the world keeps moving as people rise and fall, but the clunky comments to the press about Roglic and the 2022 Tour...
The Remco quote referenced:
“Giro 2023 is the biggest disappointment of my career. I had a big lead and our plan was perfect so far. Then I would have already won the Vuelta and the Giro and there would be only 1 Grand Tour left for my career goal to win all 3 Grand Tours in my career. Now I...
Just coming here to say that Roglic and Froome are not the same era. I would argue the 21st century eras, as defined by top dog, roughly went:
Lance Armstrong (2000-2005)
Transition Era
Alberto Contador (2007-2012)
Chris Froome (2013-2017)
Transition Era
Tadej Pogacar (2020-?)
Had Roglic...
Yeah it’s tough to place him historically. I’d have to put him below some I think he would have beaten had he been in the same era (Chris Froome, for example) based on the lack of Tour wins. I’d personally put him above several recent Tour winners though - Bernal, Thomas, Nibali, Wiggins, Evans...
I haven't stayed on top of all these threads. What is the consensus on the ceiling for Remco in 2026, if all goes really well? To me, it's something like:
Win a stage race
Podium the Tour and be within 5 minutes of victory
Win a Monument / WC
Also, Remco's taken Roglic's spot as top dog in GT time trails, he's taken Roglic's team, he's taking his Tour spot, he's taking his facial hair, and now you want the title as strongest rider in 2023 Catalunya?! Come on
@Berniece Is it surprising that Remco fans think he was clearly the strongest and would have won the 2022 Vuelta even if Roglic hadn't come into the race injured or crashed out, and that Roglic fans feel the reverse? Or that Roglic fans think he demonstrated his wiles and strength in that 2023...
I’m not sure how this proves Remco was the strongest. After all, you don’t know what Roglic could have done had he ridden with Remco’s lack of restraint. As it stands, he rode a measured race and won. Sure, LanterneRouge chose to represent La Port on their map as Evenepoel’s superior...
I definitely don’t see any evidence they hate each other, but I do think Pogi is very determined to erase everyone else and stand alone in history. They’re professional athletes in a competitive sport, so makes sense. I’m not at all criticizing that. But Roglic’s paternal instincts in 2020...
