    The The wider point is that the British authorities have never been supportive of bicycle racing - going back to the origins of the sport in the 19th century. Hence the historical popularity of time trialling in the UK, because it was a form of racing which could be done 'under the radar'...

    As explained elsewhere there are huge constraints on organising any kind of bicycle race in the UK nowadays. I'm sure the organisers would have wanted an exciting parcours as much as anyone in an ideal world

    I genuinely feel sorry for the organisers. Putting on a pro stage race in the UK nowadays must be nearly impossible. I'm sure they're as disappointed with the parcours/startlist as anyone but I don't suppose there's much they can do about it
