Cheers for the quick replies, everyone. I know he won San Sebastian last year, but was interested on his abilities on climbing in stage racing. And, like Pentacycle's post shows, there's nothing wrong with that. Hope he wins.

It's inevitable that Meersman will get a time penalty. Any other solution is beyond understanding for me. Although I'm OP-QS fan this had to say.

The finish was just 50metres to short for John D :( Now an annoying Belkin rider won :/

Well, look at it this way. It's better if the finish is 50 metres too short, than it is 200 kilometres too long, like in Andy Schleck's case.

Boasson Hagen lost over 5 mins, Farrar and Boom over 7. They probably took it is easy, but just a time penalty won't do justice for the advantage he gained by this hopeless OPQS display. And Terpstra giving him a pull like in track racing, just cringeworthy.

That looked fun though :D. I agree a time penalty and a fine for the DS seems to be in order.

It looked amazing :D

Not that I care much myself, but this entire display is not very sportsmanshiplike. That being said, in Meersman his situation I probably would've done the same.

Baffling penalty that..

Lucky to still be in the race. Riders have been thrown out for less. Holding on to the cars for a few moments and what have you.

Should at least definitely see himself dead last in the GC.

We've all seen a bit of pacing from the team car and we can all live with that - but this was just a different level. Team car was told to cut it out but still decided to give it another go shortly after. To end it all, he got a track-racing push from his teammate.

At least ASO gives out penalties unlike belgians that should have disqualified all 10 man break except 1 rider at last week K-B-K

Still he created a bit of drama in the finale. Probably worth keeping him. Hell, he might add some attacking in the race later.

Poor comparison. Today's decision is as easy as it gets, since it has no influence on the race whatsoever.

The situation in KBK, quite the contrary. Besides, the rule is pretty vague and it's unclear where to draw the line.
