2015 FIFA World Cup.

Begins tomorrow in Canada. Hope this gets some attention. I think its very entertaining, unpredictable. Last one back in 2011 was awesome.

Would like to see a team win that will celebrate it and treat it with respect like Japan did.

I very much doubt if there's enough interest for a separate women's footy topic. Maybe change the title to emphasize 'women', Hitch?

I think the Copa America clashes quite a bit with this. I will try and watch a bit of it but it could be difficult in the circumstances. The Euro U-21s are on as well. Hard to squeeze in all the games. There's even a week of European qualifiers to add to it.

I was hoping to create interest. Equality in sport means a lot to me.

Well, each his own I suppose, though its sad for me that some people would rather watch a regional tournament for below average boys over the pinnacle of the women's game, which happens to be the only opportunity the girls get to show what they can do in 4 years. It would be like in cycling choosing to watch some men's amateur race on the Romanian domestic scene, over the Women's WC road race.

If Wambach is playing on the US team for a fourth WC in a row, then I hope they win.

I'll try to watch it as much as I can, a lot of bars will have it on, especially knockout rounds. I really missed an opportunity though in not driving up to Montreal/Ottawa to see some of this in person. Guess I'll have to get myself somewhere in the future.

The Copa America isn't below average, certainly not the '07 and '11 versions. If it was a lesser league competition currently going on (to the equivalent of your amateur Romanian race), there would be no problem in watching this for many. The Copa America is by no means amateur in comparison to the women's World Cup. A Romanian cycling amateur race won't have the quality in their respective field like Messi, Neymar, Tevez, Higuain, Aguero, Cavani, James, Alexis, Vidal etc.

Not questioning starting the thread one bit. I welcome it on your part.

I will try and watch as much as I can in the circumstances.

Just discovered that the NOS is continuing with the women's games after the CL discussion. What an unexpected bonus.

And that's hardly the equivalent of a Romanian amateur race. England have players who are coming off successful seasons in the Premier League. Practically all these teams have players capped at full international. Germany have a super strong team, likewise Portugal.

Plus, the chance of someone not known previously bursting on the scene is of an added interest.

There is no FIFA World Cup this year.

There is a FIFA Women's World Cup.

I fail to see how leaving Women's out of the title of the tournament helps anyone.

Hmm.. It's not that hard to figure out as the men is always in even years and women in odd...

Does it help anyone only to use the gender stamp only with women here?

I you insist on calling it the women's world cup then you should also call it the men's world cup...

There is also the 2015 Under 20s World Cup being held in New Zealand on at the same time.

I insist on using the official name to avoid confusion, I make no comment on whether the naming is right or wrong.

Ivory Coast defence is very bad. Attack doesn't exist. Midfielders sometimes get in touch with the ball but lose it soon after. Germany already leads 2-0 and I think more to come.

If it continues in the 2nd half, Sasic could get the golden boot off this game. High defensive line with no pressure on the ball, you're asking for trouble.

Just after I posted the above, Sasic gets taking off at half-time. I wouldn't say she was too happy with that. Plenty more goals there for her.

Easy group for Germany and Norway.

True gooner. Well, in the end we should be looking at the largest goal difference of the tournament. 10 - nil, just too easy. Feel a bit sorry for Ivory Coast's goalie Thiamale, she did some good saves from what I saw.

Early round games have been well attended, but I cringe at the thought that 2,000 people will be there to see a game in a 50,000 seat stadium a week from now.

I don't follow football, but early reviews about the games from sports journalists are less than flattering. Seems the ref helped Canada win their opening game against China due to a phantom call (I saw the match; and it definitely seemed like a bad call), but that seems to me like FIFA getting up to their old tricks.
My concern is why FIFA expanded the tournament to include a lot more countries when some of them are just horrible at football.
I remember hearing a pre-tournament press conference held by the head of FIFA and it seemed like he was daring the women to put on the same show as the men. He went on and on about how the tournament schedule and tv time would be the same as the men's, but he didn't explain the criteria and thought process behind allowing a bunch of terrible teams into the tournament.
I don't think televising football games played by terrible teams in near-empty stadiums is going to be good for the sport.

A travesty how it's 2-0 when Nigeria are playing all the eye catching football.

Agree about Oshoala.

Brilliant game. That was the very least Nigeria deserved.

Okobi was outstanding.
