The 6th monument

The route is quite different from last year. Both start and finish are in Siena now, the length has been reduced by 24 kms, and the first 120 feature different sterrato sections. Overall, the quantity of sterrato has increased significantly, with the inclusion of the adjacent sectors 3 and 4, which combined together measure 20 kms. They are far from the finish anyway... they'll be useful only to wear the peloton out. The real interesting addition of the route is sector 5, almost 10 kms long with some steep climbing. This sector ends at roughly 9 kms to the start of the already mythical sector of Monte Sante Marie (now sector 6, not 7 as last year, and the overall number of sectors is 9 and not 10), after which the route is the same as last year, with the exception of the addition of a short climb after Castelnuovo Berardenga, which substitutes a false flat section.

Quite possibly my favourite one day race on the calendar (in terms of racing and parcours at least). Hoping Cancellara will put the hammer down. Sector 6 is the place to do it.

Dont know if he is good enough on the climbs anymore though, last year he was lacking. On the other hand he has been climbing well so far this year and is obviously in monster shape.

One of the reasons I love the race is the amount of possible winners:

- Stybar could be in for a repeat, this is maybe the race that suits Stybar the most. He has started the season a bit slower than last year but showed good form in Algarve. + Etixx has a strong team.
- Cancellara is an obvious favourite and looks to be hungry this year. Already two victories to his name.
- GVA and Valverde will both be looking to take revenge from last year. One of these could very well come out on top.
- Nibali looks really motivated and could ride away from everyone on one of the climbs.
- Sagan, depending on his shape, could totally boss the race as well. He has the abilities and the Tinkoff team looks strong with Kreuziger, Gatto etc.

Im rooting for Spartacus as I said, but I have a feeling that Nibali will show everyone that he is fiery this year and come out on top.

Beat me to it :p

Can't wait. Absolutely awesome race. And now downhill sterrato too! My Giro stage doesn't look so stupid now does it! :D

Sagan and Valverde will be desperate to win this, so close so many times but no cigar. Wide open so I'm not going to make any predictions. Eshnar could you keep an ever changing update on the Siena province weather? If we are in for a 2010 Montalcino-esque day then I will be so happy.

I hope the action starts on Sector 5. As you said looks really interesting. And if we get racing from 70km out then it'll be awesome. My top lad Fedi is my man to watch. Ofc Benoot, Cancellara, GVA, Stybar and co will be the favourites, along with the two mentioned above. I hope Rosa races.

Nizzolo? Ferrari? Modolo? Bennati? These sprinters have no chance.

My pick is Valverde. He seems really...hot....at the moment.

Ferrari is pretty versatile. I would not be surprised if he could do a top 10 in a race like this. Benna is just doing the dom work for Sagan. Molodo and Nizzolo have no chance, of course.

Bennati did a pretty good ride here a few years ago, didn't he? Also, I would back Nizzolo for a top 10 over Ferrari, though both scenarios are very unlikely.
