Especially true for Yates and Nibali who are looking at race as win or nothing. Fighting for second or third really isn't important.

Nibali yeah, he doesn't care I guess. But Yates' palmares isn't really impressive enough yet to snub his nose at a GT podium.

Nibali brutalized himself to get second at Lombardia a few months ago. Of course he cares about the Giro podium, as do the team paying him, as do teams considering making him an offer for a new contract. As does Yates.

Now I agree that Nibali and Yates are very unlikely to ride for a podium unless they are absolutely sure the win is gone. Neither of them would have taken a guaranteed third before the race began and neither would now. But that’s not the same as not caring about third.

Nice to see Dunbar so strong already, in his first GT and as a last minute call up. Also I always like it when a kid who is congratulated on an impressive performance just says he’s very disappointed not to win.

Even nicer to see Benedetti win. What a clever, gutsy performance. He wasn’t the strongest but he was the most determined and he paced himself to perfection. There are few things better in the sport than a great but unsung career domestique landing a huge win.

Yeah, I have also huge respect for Benedetti, he is a great domestique in practically every terrain. His first pro win - in Giro d' Italia! Wasn't that also the case for Formolo and Ciccone? That must be hella big for an Italian.

The major difference is that Benedetti had to wait significantly longer for his first pro-win than the two others did.
