Vote is on Sunday. Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul are the bids.

But if you dont care about the olympics this isnt just about that.

Looking at recent years, the vote on Sunday could also decide who will win the Tour de France in 2020 and in the years that follow.

And decide a hell of a lot of other sporting events. Which ever country wins, their athletes are likely to recieve a big umm, good felling boost across all sports as the new decade approaches.

Im guessing you read "recent years" as "recent olympics"?

Obviously Greece and China didnt come to dominate cycling, since the sport is so weak there.

It had an effect on other sports though. If Spain win 2020, cycling isn't a small sport there. There could definately be effects.

Originally voted Tokyo forgetting it was in Bejing in 2008, I am not sure with Turkeys HR record they should get it, so I am not that bothered between the other two.

Would not mind it going to an African country, but I am not sure any of them could afford to hold it.

I'm guessing they will give it to Tokyo. With the recent talk of the possibility of Turkey being banned from the WC by the IAAF due to the recent spate of positive tests, I find it unlikely that they will give the games to Istanbul. Madrid won't get it as Spain couldn't afford to pay enough bribe money :D

Well South Africa couldnt afford the 2010 world cup. So they just cut back on nonesense like education and healthcare which doesn't really matter in order to make sure footballers had top of the line hotels and stadiums.

Anway, no African cities made bids, and none are in the running for Sunday of course. 2 did however consider it apparently - Cairo and Cassablanca.

That is the problem that all African countries have, definately no chance of Cairo getting it though, shame though, would like somewhere like Ghana to hold it.

I am suprised India has not made a bid for it though.

Delhi were going to make a bid but I think they realized it wasn't going to happen

Don't thjnk Accra could win a bid. They don't really have any of the things a bid usually needs to have a chance.

Realisticlly I think only cape town Durban or jberg could stand a chance in the next 20 years. Or possibly Nairobi, purely because of the prowess of athletics. But even those are long shots.

If the favourite Tokyo wins on Sunday then I think 2024 will go to Paris as it will be the centenary of the Paris Olympics. Then 2028 will go to the US. 12 years from now when they are sellecting the 2032 Olympics maybe Africa or India will be in a better position to host one.

This is a tough choice:

- Spain had the summer olympics in 1992. 1 point
- Turkey has never had the olympics. 3 points
- Tokyo had the Olympics in 1964 2 points

Madrid has most of the needed infrastructure and venues already, so the games won't be that expensive. 3 points

Turkey is likely to go on a binge. They love building big stuff. This could get very costly. 1 point

Japan will likely keep the cost somewhere in between the two others. 2 points

Spain 4 points
Turkey 4 points
Japan 4 points

Madrid: We have a doping problem.
Istanbul: Whats doping?
Japan: We have a radiation problem.

I don't know what they will choose. I don't know which I would choose if I were them either.

Congrats to Tokyo on it's win. They will certainly spend wisely and the facilities are unlikely to become white elephants.
The Middel East being such a Troubled spot and Turkey having it's own troubles with the Kurds would have gone against Istanbul. I do hope Turkey get's to at least host the Euros.

Euros? You mean Uefa European football championships? They lost that 3 years ago. The next Euros from now on are all going to be shared between a dozen countries. The most they can win is 1 or 2 matches.

I'm glad it wasn't Madrid. They tried to sell it as a boost for the economy when it has long been proven that such an event has no lasting effects

I do wonder what the cycle route will be. Never been to Tokyo but judging by the rest of Japan and by the fact that Mount Fuji lies so close, I'm guessing they have plenty of hills to make use of if they want.

Yep, UEFA Euros. I do remember Platini's crazy proposal to share the games between different cities, but I thought t would be after the 2020 edition.
Tough luck for Turkey then. They were desperate to host a major international sporting event to show the world their relevance.

Cetainly, it can be made hilly if they want. I think the parcours of the Japan Cup is near Tokyo, and it's quite hilly.

It seems the plan is for a temporary wooden velodrome in a
new sports hall in the Olympic precinct which will be removed
after the Games and the wood recycled or reused but not
necessarily as a velodrome.
The last global event in Japan was the 1990 World's, back when
there was still the professional and amateur distinction and the
road and the track were contested in the same general area one
right after the other. In 1990 the track events were held on the
indoor 333m. Maebashi Keirin Velodrome.

Beijing beat Almaty to host winter olympics 7 years from now. First city ever to host both summer and winter games.

Interesting also that it was 2 dictatorships fighting it out for the games. fifa gets flack for giving their event to Russia and Qatar. Are IOC any less corrupt. Isn't Hein Verbruggen still a member?

They're all as bad as each other. In fairness to the IOC, they had no other choice once the bid deadline was closed. At least FIFA had USA instead of Qtar

They also had a bid from Australia which would have been a great host.
