2022 Giro CQ Game

Here we go again:
For those who already know how it all works, the key info is unchanged budget of 3500, 8 men rider prices as of update to be released on 2nd May, submit by start of stage 1 on 6th May, and selection spreadsheet is here.

If you found it necessary to read beyond that, you might be new to the games, in which case you are very welcome.

In the Giro CQ Game your challenge is to select a team of 8 riders that will be competing in the Giro: your team remains unchanged throughout, for better or worse. There is no selecting different riders for different stages, any more than the DSes get to do so.
The restriction on your team is that they must have a total cost of 3500 or less, based on their CQ points gained for the year to 1st May. That is determined by a download of scores that should be available on the afternoon of Monday 2nd May on that excellent website, which I shall upload to a selection tool here (If you prefer not to use that tool, you are looking for the red number in a white box just below the old-fashioned fuel gauge style meter in the top right of a rider's page, such as this example that you won't be using, but that figure can change from day to day: it is the number as of the end of Sunday 1st that matters).

Your selected riders can gain points according to the CQ scale for GC position (500 for the winner, then 375, 315, 265, 240 down to 135 for 10th, 44 for 30th, 16 for 50th and 15 for all finishers below that), for being awarded the Pink jersey (18 points per stage, except the last one), for stage position (70 points, then 40, 25, 15, 10 down to 1 for 10th) and for final ranking in the climbing and points classifications (same distribution as for stages, no points for leading the classification during the race, no points for the young rider classification).

I will update daily, real life permitting, with a table based on each team's projected finish if nothing were to change in the classifications from that point on, and also with a secondary classification ("purplish points", because I won't concede that that colour is described as cyclamen in English) based only on stage finish points. Some managers like to stack their teams with sprinters and breakaway riders with an eye on that prize.

To enter, please sent your list of 8 riders (please do not append info like their cost or teams, it creates extra work for me) to me by PM on either Cycling News Forum or VeloRooms (you will contribute to the average score of your chosen platform in the inter-Forum challenge) by the start of the race on Friday 6th (11:40 CET I believe). I will lodge my selection with the first entrant (usually Comodoro, but sometimes others are faster) as soon as possible to ensure I am above suspicion. PLEASE send the riders' names in the form in which they appear on the CQ site (and therefore in the selection spreadsheet), otherwise entering your team becomes much more laborious. And while you can start planning, please do not submit your teams until the prices are finalised: if riders are doing Romandie or Eschborn-Frankfurt, or if they did them last year, the numbers will probably be wrong.

If you do not leave submitting your team until the last minute, I should be able to warn you if there is any error and give you a chance to change it. I do have a strangely contrived set of criteria by which replacements are selected if you are over budget or have a non-starter, but I'll only post it if necessary.

Please do have a go: it's a bit of fun, and it feels far more worth my time if there is a good number of entrants. Feel free to publicise it wherever seems appropriate.

And as I usually say on my PMs to confirm receipt of teams, good luck to your teams, and enjoy the game and the Giro.

Search usually puts that list up at Velorooms, but give him a chance: It's not much more than an hour since the prices were released.

Did you try looking at the selection spreadsheet: It is all in one page. I thought you young people were all highly computer literate.

Otherwise, the prices that are on a rider's CQ page today are probably accurate: as the week goes on and past results are removed they may become less so. Like I explain in the OP, it's the red number in the white box below the needle gauge at the top right of a rider page, or if you prefer column D on the team page.

I'm not saying he should do it now, just asking if he's gonna do it once all the teams - maybe not EF... - have officially announced their lineups.

That's... kinda the problem. So much scrolling... and it doesn't even appear to be listed alphabetically.

I'll figure something out. Maybe I should just say that if I keep getting too many riders from near the top of the spread-sheet, I should be worried.
I'm definitely not gonna do any kind of "semi-deliberance"! Not after the effort to squeeze in Vanmarcke for the Spring Classics Game...

And I had completely forgotten that I actually briefly lead the Vuelta Game last year...

scrap that, it took like 5 minutes. Teams with a pizza are confirmed

A couple of the teams already in had selected Chaves, but the Ed First team has now been announced (not last!) without him.

If you name a rider who is not selected, and you don't notice and replace him, I will fill the gap in your team with the next cheapest rider (first alphabetically if there are more than one at that price). So those who picked Chaves will have Edward Theuns unless they do something about it. (Edit: they have both politely declined Theuns overnight)

If your team is over budget, I will remove the cheapest rider that leaves enough budget to put in a replacement (at least 20 points), and then put in the most expensive pick that can be bought with the money thus released.

And Groupama FdJ have finally confirmed (the same as PCS had predicted, so no change to either the selection spreadsheet or to Search's table above).

So now you have no excuse to procrastinate further over selecting your team. 48 hours (ish) to go, I have 11 teams so far, but am hoping for about 4 times that.

My last gratuitous bumping of the thread to remind you to enter.

27 teams submitted so far (I hope I have acknowledged all of them), 61 different riders selected, 3 of them on more than half the teams, and 28 unique picks.

My work appointment for Friday pm has been cancelled, so I'll be working on the lists and numbers while watching stage one. Make sure your list of 8 is with me before it starts so that you are included. (and if you do it before about 8am UK time I'll be able to check it for you).

If you're not in it, you can't win it!

And they're off

37 teams, 71 riders, and (eventually) one winner.

@RedheadDane

Did you attempt to get 8 unique picks?
I nearly took Bauhaus, but landed on Dainese in the end.

Also I'm surprised that I'm the only one who has selected Martin. I thought Peters would have been a unique pick for me here (I couldn't really leave him out, could I?), but I'm glad other people also believe in him.

The riders

An interesting distribution. There were hardly any riders starting in the 700-900 bracket, where riders one might expect in the top ten would often be found and can be fairly popular picks. That means that there are far more riders being picked in the 300-450 bracket (with some real gems in that range), so far fewer of the variety of under 100 pt riders, among whom in most years we would find a lot of the variety in picks, and the source of a large proportion of the number of riders relevant to the game.

So, out of 37 teams, here are the numbers going for each rider:

27: LANDA MEANA Mikel
20: LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
19: EWAN Caleb
18: CARTHY Hugh, YATES Simon
15: GALL Felix
12: KÄMNA Lennard
11: ARENSMAN Thymen
Those eight have a within-budget total cost of 3268, so neatly define themselves as the Collective Wisdom team.

9: CICCONE Giulio, DUMOULIN Tom
8: FOSS Tobias Svendsen
7: CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio, HINDLEY Jai
6: SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro, VAN DER POEL Mathieu
5: BARDET Romain, BUCHMANN Emanuel, GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
4: GIRMAY HAILU Biniam, KNOX James, POZZOVIVO Domenico
3: BALLERINI Davide, CIMOLAI Davide, DE GENDT Thomas, HAMILTON Lucas, KELDERMAN Wilco, NIBALI Vincenzo, PETERS Nans, VALTER Attila
2: CEPEDA ORTIZ Jefferson Alexander, CORT NIELSEN Magnus, DOWSETT Alex, FELLINE Fabio, FIORELLI Filippo, HEPBURN Michael, MODOLO Sacha, ROSA Diego, SIVAKOV Pavel, SKJELMOSE JENSEN Mattias, TAARAMÄE Rein

and I hope that if you were to count the asterisks above, there will be 31 of them.

Slow Climber has, especially for a rookie in these games, an extraordinarily high popularity score, and he only differs in one pick from the Collective Wisdom team: he has the still fairly popular Foss rather than Kamna, thus making the tracking of the Collective Wisdom team almost redundant.

Major picks
I'll define a major pick as a rider with a cost of 700 points or more. We seem to have unusually few teams that have more than one of them this time, perhaps because of the previously mentioned wealth of riders in the 300-450 range.
So those who have doubled up are:
Carapaz & van der Poel: Bicycle Boy
Carapaz and Yates: Armchair Cyclist
Carapaz & Demare: Josedin
Van der Poel & Bardet: Salvarani
Yates & Bardet: Scrooll07 and TRiley36
Yates & Girmay: Zigzag Wanderer
Bilbao & Girmay: Titan31

so the others only have one of these expensive picks:
Almeida: Mellow Velo
