2024 Women's CQ Manager game

As already mentioned in the main game thread, and building on last year's WWT game, the time has come for a proper season-long, all races (well, those that give points) version of the game focussed on women riders.

Your team A maximum of 16 riders, with a maximum total CQ score in 2023 of 4000 points. The spreadsheet dated 11th Dec downloadable from here is almost certainly the final reckoning as to their costs, although if there is a download on 1st Jan (or 31 Dec) that will supersede it. I do not believe that there are any riders that require a doping limitation on scores to be applied, but if so (perhaps someone will tell me if I have overlooked anyone likely to be selected to whom it does apply) her cost will be the last score unaffected by suspension or a ban, or any higher score since then.

Entries A simple list of 16 names, no need for team names or cost details, and preferably in the CQ format (surname before forename; Spanish, Danish and Portuguese names not necessarily as you would guess, former surnames in brackets: if you can find the correct version your host will be eternally grateful) Send by PM to me before the start of the Santos Women's Tour Down Under on 12th January (Stage 1 starts at 11:10 local time of Friday morning. That is 01:10 CET, or 00:10 GMT/UTC). I will try to get back to you if there are problems with your team, but if time runs out then I will remove the minimum number of riders necessary to bring you back within budget (if two riders are at same cost, I will remove the first one alphabetically), and your team will have 15 (or fewer) members.

Points Your score is the total CQ points won by your 16 selected riders throughout 2024: I believe that the the last is Vuelta Internacional Femenina a Costa Rica ending on 20th October. Any points earned before your team is submitted (eg from Australian national championships) will not be credited to your team. If your team reaches me before any pre-Santos event, then you will get points from that event, so if you want to pick someone who you think will get early points, get the team in quickly.

Updates I hope to update approximately fortnightly, but please be patient, especially during Grand Tours and in the midst of the Spring Classics. I will not be doing a green jersey or polka jersey because of the likely inconsistency of updates. Nudge me if it gets to three weeks with no updates.

Last year was a bit experimental, but hopefully this can now become an established part of the stable of CQ games here for some time. The more entrants, the more likely that will be the case, so learn a bit more about the women's peloton if you need to, have a go, and enjoy seeing how they get on in 2024.

This will be my first time participation in the women's edition of the game and I already have an impression that the budget for women's teams is more generous than for men's teams, just like in Liiio's game.

Slightly more generous: If I had a squad of 16 at the same average price per rider it would have been 3,637 points, which would have been a bit eccentric. I rounded up rather than down to 3500.

But if you want to only spend 3636 and give the rest of us a better chance, feel free.

It seems that AC hasn't made a selection sheet to help us out this time around, but it turned was actually fairly easy, even for me, to replace the names and points in the one from last year's game with the names/points from the latest CQ update.

I've had a hard time spending all my points this time around, so I personally wouldn't mind it if we were allowed a 17th rider in future editions. That would bring the average price per rider down, but it would still be higher than in the men's game. That said, I would probably still get frustrated during the selection process no matter what.

If you plan to include any Australian women in your team who you think will get points in the national Road Race championship, then you need to get your teams sent in before that race starts at 09:20 local time (UCT + 11) That means 23:20 CET tonight (and I assume you can work it out for your time zone of choice)
The closing date for the game is 5 days later, but the spreadsheet will be set up to take away points earned before you submit your team.

You'll only have yourselves to blame...

Hi, so just to clarify, if we have an australian on our team that raced this weekend, we will lose their points if we change our team before the deadline (even if we keep the australian)?

Let's imagine that Sheila Shrimp-Thrower scored 20 points across the Aussie national championships.

If you had sent her name in as part of a team before those races, then your team will reflect her full score (assuming she stays on the team)
If you were so impressed by Sheila's performance that you want to put her in your team some time between now and Friday's deadline, then that's fine, but those 20 points will be deducted from her score for the season.
If you had her on your team before the championships, but believe that she has now peaked and decide to swap her out, you are welcome to do so, but you cannot keep her points if you don't keep her.
If you make any change to your team that does not affect Ms Shrimp-Thrower, then her contribution to your team is unaffected.

Hope that makes it clear. I doubt it will make a lot of difference at the end of the season, but it also seemed fairer to prevent people making picks without risk.

This is your 60 (ish) hour call: teams should be PMed to me by 11:10 New South Wales Time on Friday. That is 01:10 on Friday morning for CET, and I'll assume that you can calculate it for your own time zone from that.

If you uncover lots of inexpensive, younger riders, don't forget Samu's 2024 Emerging Female Riders CQ Game.

But also I would draw your attention to the game that Jon Ezeitza mentioned above. For that you need 20 female riders within a generous total budget of 10,000 CQ points in 2023. However, you may only pick one from each of the following groups

  • Vollering/Kopecky/Wiebes
  • Reusser/Ludwig/Persico
  • Lippert/Niewiadoma/Labous
  • Brown/Georgi/Realini
You may not substitute across the groups (eg taking none from the top trio does not permit you to take two from the Reusser/Ludwig/Persico group). You do not have to take anyone from the groups.
Additionally, you must have at least three riders born 2002 or later. But these younger riders carry a bonus: indicate one of them to get double her score, and two others to get one and a half times their points. There is no restriction on having more than three U23s, but only three of them will get a bonus.
There are 4 jerseys: CQ points, weekly position, young riders (total of the three that you select for bonuses) and the combination jersey based on position in the other three.

If you read Spanish, there is some chat, and some very good team-by-team analysis, in the thread that Jon links to above; if you don't, that's not a problem because there is no need to register at Parlamento Ciclista and teams can be sent by email to juegocqfemenino@gmail.com and there are weekly updates on Twitter. Deadline is the end of Thursday 11th (23:59 Spanish time): points gained in the Aussie Championships will not count.

But neither of those games are instead of this one.

(edited with a couple if clarifications and corrections that JonE gave me in a PM on Parlamento Ciclista)

Well, stage 1 of TDU has already been ridden, so I think it's safe to say the deadline for sending in teams has been passed.

My rider for TDU: Uttrup.

I do (semi-)follow the same selection rule as in the Men's Main game, but while there is another Dane at TDU, I decided against picking her.

Feltet has done their best to hype her up though. Unfortunately she, like many others before her, started her career with a crash.

Which left 673 points for the remaining 4 places.
The next 4 in popularity were
REALINI Gaia
9
DYGERT Chloe
8
BAUERNFEIND Ricarda
8
MANLY Alexandra
8
but their total cost was 1908, so I needed to remove the most expensive pair among them, That was Realini and Dygert, and there were two zero-cost riders among the 5 riders on 7 teams (both returning from 'retirement')
EDWARDS (WINDER) Ruth
VAN DEN BROEK-BLAAK Chantal

Fisher-Black, Rayer and Vas were also picked 7 times, but outside the budget.

Team Popularity
As often seems to be the case, Madrazo reads our minds and comes up with the team that shares more picks than anyone else.

The Collective Wisdom team would rank 192 here

Redhead Dane's picks are all Scandi-Finnic; Urkiola's are all cyclocross riders. If anyone else's team had a theme, I have either forgotten it or found it too subtle.

I'm quite happy to see Eneritz Vadillo on 3 teams. LS leaving out Lilibeth Chacón is obviously a tragedy, but a sneaky Chinese pick is lovely to see.

I've actually tried to use my brain here and have gone fairly route one, so I probably won't win.
I shouldn't end up losing either.

Points that will not be allowed
Rather than have a very short run-in to the game, I decided to start after the Aussie championships, but only to give those points to managers that named the riders before they had the points in the bank.
I don't expect this to make the difference between which teams do well and which don't: it could cause a swapping of positions between teams that are roughly equal.

The managers who will see a difference between the sum of their riders' scores and the team score are:

There are a few tweaks I want to make to the spreadsheet before I publish it, but it will be available soon.

I think not picking Pieterse may hurt me badly but I just had my team ready and couldn't really find a way to swap any of my riders for her.

I figured a lot of people would pick her so she would be a pretty safe bet even if she didn't perform. We don't know how many road races she'll end up doing (should be more than in 2023 at least), so she might not become a much better pick than some other riders will.

I couldn't find a way to fit her in once I'd made the other obviously essential selections because she took too much of the leftover budget, which was pretty small once Kasia and Demi had eaten up three quarters of the points allocation, and unlike last year the profit margins were going to be much slimmer as she did do most of a full calendar in 2023 whereas she missed a lot of 2022 injured. Marcela Hernández is subbing for her this season to cover Lilibeth's section of the calendar.

However, I came very, very close to just picking Vollering, Niewiadoma and Uttrup for 3995 points and then trying to figure out how to make a competitive team solely out of 0-point entrants. I can't believe y'all cowards daren't pick Demi-Goddess.
