At the moment the break includes Pierre Rolland and Juan António López-Cozar so at least a couple of climbers have decided to try their luck, lol.

Philipsen seems to be climbing way better this season. In Turkey he was already following in theory way better climbers and now he was in the top 10 over the last climb. Becoming of the better climbing sprinters.

I don't understand at all why most of the teams even race here. Of course the parcours is also not as good as it could be, but basically every team has no other plan than a sprint where they have no chance against Philipsen and co after such a lackluster race.

Uno-X, Ag2r, Arkea, Total Energy, Ef , Lotto - why not make the race harder? They should make the parcours harder again but often the race is what you make out of it. The generally bad field also contributes to this situation. No Ineos, Jumbo, Movistar or Quick-Step here. The German races are really quite bad - hopefully the Deutschland Tour gets put in WT in a few years. It's quite entertaining because they don't have to follow the Frankfurt and Hamburg constraints.

To make things a bit more interesting, they have timed it so the finish will be more-or-less simultaneous with the stage in Festival Elsy Jacobs.

Philipsen took a break after Turkey and didn't train much for the past two weeks. So not sure he's really gonna be that superior

And Gaviria second, couldn't have had a sprint that went more against the form of the past few months. Happy to see him and Bennett doing well again.

Girmay looked completely done. Barely managed to get out of Bahrain's wheel to do his leadout.
I thought it was a decent lead out for Kristoff, but Kristoff didn’t accelerate as fast as Bennett. You can see in the overhead shot that he loses 5 meters or so ,then has to wind it up again, and he finished strong. Maybe just bad timing as Ghirmay isn’t that experienced as a leadout rider?

No, Girmay just had no acceleration left.

great sprint of De Lie who was way too far behind when starting but doubled a lot of riders to finish still 6th...

His own fault according to him (and the images confirm this). Couldn't follow Van Gils' and Janse van Rensburgs wheel in the last few kms because of tired legs. Janse van Rensburg (great first ride from him) did make it to the front in the last km but sadly De Lie wasn't with him.

Still an impressive sprint for someone with bad legs tho.

Around Cologne used to be a decent race!
