Tour of Bulgaria 2010 |11 - 19 September will host 10 Stages. The history of the Tour of Bulgaria starts at noon on the 21st of August 1924 (11 years before the first Vuelta a Espana edition) when 21 cyclists line up for the start of the first cycling tour of Bulgaria. The first tour is also one of the longest, as it was common for the times - it run for over 1933 km. over paths, rather than roads. 13 riders only make it to the finish. Due to the technology drawbacks at the time the first tour is the only one with 2 winners - Georgi Abadjhiev & Kosta Dulgerov.
Notable winners in the Tour of Bulgaria include the record holder and four times winner Ivaylo Gabrovski (last team CT Nessebar). The veteran Pavel Shumanov '42 and still racing (current team Hemus Vivelo Troyan - http://vivelo-bikes.com/racing/teams) with 3 wins. 3 wins also have the legend Boyan Kotsev (80 years today and a notable coach of Bulgarian & Greek professional teams and national representations). Boyan Kotsev and Hristo Zaikov are the only multiple winners that made it in a row.
The first foreigner to win the Tour of Bulgaria was Irji Hava from the then republic of Chechoslovakia in 1965. The last foreigner to win the Bulgarian National Tour was Martin Prazdnovski from Slovakia in 2005. 18 foreigners in total have won the Bulgarian Tour with 6 from the former USSR.
Until today 39 countries have participated in the tour, this year for the first time in Bulgaria will arrive teams from South and North America - the international team of "Start" Argentina and team "Exergy" http://teamexergy.com/ from the state of Idaho, USA - the last team of the 4times winner Ivaylo Gabrovski.
The 2010 edition will top the record from 1949 for participation, 117 cyclists started then, while at 11th of September this year more than 120 riders from 21 teams will line up on the start.

Shortest, the 47th (1997) - 924 km.
