It'll be stinking hot. The winds will be vicious. There is very little to see. The road trains are scary, and particularly intimidating at night. He will have to take camping gear and *lots* of water, as he can't be guaranteed to make it between towns in a day.

Unless you've been out there (I've only nibbled at the edges) you've got no idea just how big, mostly flat, and sparsely populated the Aussie outback is.

Just have a look at Google Maps and Street View. There is *nothing* there for thousands of kilometres, just the occasional roadhouse every 180 km or so.

If I had a choice, I'd do this ride in winter. No, scratch that. I wouldn't do it at all.

I second rgmerk.

Maybe he could do the riding at night, if he's lit up like a Christmas tree and prepared to dive off the road when the road trains come along.

Must be seriously masochistic.

I hope he's used to long bike treks. But even if he is, riding on that barren plane, especially into a headwind, is going to be painful and slow and unbearably boring. :)

There will be a lot of wind when he is riding. He is going through some very open areas. I agree with SpareTyre in suggesting that he ride at night. It is the hottest area (if not one of the) Hottest areas in Australia. IN saying that riding at night is not the most safest things to do considering that one's vision will be impaired in such a dark place. Also many trucks travel through the Nullabor at night so it can be quite dangerous.

dude is crazy.

hottest time of year and there's nothing out there.

absolutely nothing. i caught the bus from perth to sydney once (dumbest thing i ever did (apart from catching it home again)), the stretch from kalgoorlie to adelaide was so empty of everything, occasional roadhouse full of sausage rolls, pies and truckies, that's about it.

I am cheered at Alexandre's sense of adventure and applaud his guts but seriously question his timing and cerebral architecture.

Somebody who's done (part of) it

You might be interested to pass on Lisa Dempster's journal of her ride across the Nullarbor (about 1250 of the 2700 km).

She did this ride during the (southern) winter.

I'd do that...

But I would use more sun protection than him, and carry less gear, and also ride during the cooler parts of the day, if not at night. A friend of mine went south to north, rode through the night, slept under cattle grids during the day (apparently the road trains wake you up when they pass over) and pulled a trailer full of nothing but water...

+1. That's a great way of putting it.

Lots of journals of people who made the trip.

I'll enjoy reading those. Especially the journals site. Awesome.

Ive riden Adelaide to Perth solo in 15 days on my roadie.

Those Nullabor headwinds sort out the weak from the strong for sure! lol!

Ive also ridden from Adelaide to the very tip of cape york solo too. All vegan.

Buy an iPod (with a lot of gb on it), fill it with music so you have something to listen to and even keep you motivated.
