Well as ProTour (or whatever it's called now) they have to go there, just not with Bertie if they follow through on their threat.

On behalf of the fight against doping, and on behalf of his own clean riders, JV should really raise his voice in this matter, tell Riis to back off and be happy Contador is still allowed to race in the first place. Contador is presently cheating his way past Garmin riders.

Absolutely and Riis shouldn't forget that originally a guy caught cheating was not to be hired by a pro team for 4 years.

I'm pretty sure that UCI don't react too well to threats anyway and that Riis is going to lose his ProTour status and hopefully lose his job and be gone for good.

The UCI is in the wrong here. They are trying to enforce a rule change on people who committed offenses before the rule existed. It is ex post facto law. Riis has every right to challenge it.

It is likely flat out illegal as ex post facto law violates Europe's convention on human rights. It also probably runs afoul of employment laws.

I'm no legal expert, but the ECHR refers to criminal offences, which isn't what we're dealing with here. It doesn't necessarily cover civil and sporting offences.

Certain jurisdictions, including the United States of America and most likely the ECHR, allow ex post facto laws in civil cases.

Yes we've been over that before, the rule applies to all new contracts, if Riis didn't like that rule he shouldn't have signed the contract and hired a rider not caught cheating...but we all know what Riis does with rules, he thinks they're for suckers.
