Alderman seeks to curb cell phone use while biking

Texting and driving has been a hot-button issue for years, and now, the Chicago City Council is going to take up distracted bicycle riding.

Under the proposal, bicyclists would operate under the same rules as drivers — no texting, no e-mailing, no surfing, no phone conversations, while riding. The only exception would be with the use of a hands-free device.

I think the greater problem is not not having use of both hands, but the inability to hear cars around you, and just mental distraction in general. Allowing cell phone use with hands free is like allowing use of ipods. I really think it's a bad idea. If you want to listen to music, listen to it. If you want to ride, ride. If you must do both, use a trainer. I guarantee you will not get full benefit of riding if you are doing it while doing something else.

How the heck is Darwinism supposed to progress with laws like that?
Seems to me anyone doing those things while cycling should slow down and let some oxygen into their brain.

I live in Chicago, and I thought it was already against the law to use earphones while riding. Shows how well I pay attention

I have been known to ride and talk on my phone at the same time. I have to agree it is dangerous in some regards but i think a law will not do much to stop it. The video shows the number of people talking and driving not getting caught and i would expect that quite a few people (myself included) would just shoot off up the footpath or down a narrow lane if they where to be hailed by a cop trying to fine them.
