April Fools from the Cycling Industry

My personal fave is a story CN ran on 1.4.2007 claiming Dubai had bought the rights to hold the prologue to the 2009 TdF, and were going to hold it inside the Mall of the Emirates, to include an uphill finish up the slope of the indoor "Ski Dubai."

This was a brilliantly engineered hoax because in January of the same year, Paris' Louvre museum had announced Dubai's sister city of Abu Dhabi had arranged to be the home to its first annex outside of France. So it sounded like each city was trying to one-up the other by buying their own French institution. Plus, they would have to hold the race indoors because Dubai's streets in July are hot enough to melt sew-up tyre glue. And this particular mall is plenty large, each lap around the ground floor is a solid kilometer, and it even features the world's largest indoor ski slope, to be thawed for use as an (85m tall) uphill finish. So it all made perfect sense...

...except for that transfer ....
