Ashenden to resign

Michael Ashenden, on of the Architects of the UCI's BioPassport, will resign. Did not want to sign a restrictive confidentiality agreement that would limit his ability to publicly speak his opinion no

Given that the UCI has ignored Bio Passport positives, said some riders are too well funded to pursue, spent funds that were supposed to be for the passport on promoting races, and reduced testing by 30%, it seems like a smart move to distance himself from them

some Ashenden interviews

No Gripper. No Asenden. Strangely infrequent testing......

Not much cause for optimism.

I thought Gripper pulled the party line at the UCI like McQuaid did?

They are both Aussies so that's a shame!

Somehow I formed the impression that Gripper was cautious in what she said publicly while at the UCI, but she fought hard internally for fair and robust anti doping measures. Can't remember how I decided that. It's since she left that all the shenanigans with suspicious riders not getting tested started, and Ashenden started making comments about infrequent testing. Can't recall new biopass cases being opened since she left either, but someone might be able to correct me on that.

A pretty sad day for anti-doping.

Ashenden and other experts need to be able to speak out, this new gagging order from the new body is just stupid.

They are all smart enough to know not to mention specifics unless in a disciplinary hearing. The general thusts, and areas to strengthen have got to be able to be discussed freely, otherwise how can the science improve ?

Riders will no longer worry about being caught doping. They're just worried on whether they are on the good or the bad list with the UCI. It makes so much difference to be asked for a donation or to be sacrificed by your own global federation. And if you inquire in the wrong manner, they may even hang you for attempted corruption, to show once more how rightful the UCI is.

Should we expect Riis-like performances from here on?

No, I don't think so. I also think that, however I have a lot of respect for Ashenden, that it's only normal that the experts cannot exploit their knowledge on individual passports for their own good or pleasure.

If an expert has doubts about a profile or the way testing happens, he should address this within the sport. He can bring to light problems with testing in general, but it's absolutely not ethical to publicly say something about individual cases...

The thing about the clause is that its not just when hes working there, but after he would leave he could not openly speak about it for 8 years.

I hope Asheden would write a book about his "UCI experience" & perhaps reveal all the rotten deals done by Pat & Co. to protect & blackmail riders as they see it fit in their own "interests"....

If Paul Kimmage and Ashenden could work together on another book that would be really good. Better still, pick a country with lax slander laws to publish the book in multiple languages. If either one are reading, I'd pre-order that book the minute it was available.

My recollection of Gripper's term was she was an active public speaker and displayed an enthusiasm for actually doing the job for which she was hired. The person who replaced her has vanished into the UCI with no public appearances beyond one with Pat bliovating about the UCI's anti-doping theater.

We're headed back into the Dark Ages. It's the 1980's all over again.

That is a great idea seeing as Paul has time on his hands these days. And why stop with Ashenden - that would only be a chapter at best. Need to get Bordry and Pound in the book too. And Greg and Betsy and Tyler. A chapter on the Feds. Preface by Walsh and Simeoni.

Seriously, that group has done so much damage to cycling's reputation, what harm could another book do? How many people would read it? 139?

Anyway, THANKS to the thousands of unsung heros who work tirelessly on the anti-doping front. In labs around the world. No drama queens or attention hogs. Hats off to you guys and gals. Hats Off.

Which is the least period of time. I would never like him to be allowed to talk about individual cases to his liking. Ashenden (and every other human being) isn't infallible and doesn't represent the truth. He can criticize the system, I would even be happy if he does (hopefully to change it), but speaking about individuals is unethical. The end doesn't always justify the means...

Which co-insides nicely with the statue of limitations on any athlete caught in the doping cross-hairs.

So to address your question - masking the use of a prior transfusion becomes the paramount concern nowadays. Which means that, because the excess plasma leaves the circulation within a couple of hours, it is necessary to hide the elevated ratio each time they provide a blood test. It is an unfortunate reality that Passport testers during the Tour have only limited opportunities to access teams, and riders can be pretty confident of predicting when Passport tests will be conducted - for example on the morning of rest days. This translates to a situation where, regardless when the red cells had been reinfused, a rider seeking to mask doping would be motivated to infuse plasma shortly before they predict they will be required to provide a Passport sample.

That's awful. How hard can it be to make sure that ABP-testing is unpredictable?

Have any other Pro Sports adopted Bio-Passport tracking systems yet?
Football? Rugby? Tennis? Baseball? Handegg? Basketball?
If they did/do, nondisclosure will be an integral part I would think. Duh.
I would think the athletes would deserve that at least.

The UCI deserves that too so they can blackmail riders.;)
