Backwards for the road maybe but that make aero sense. The front wheel "breaks" the wind so you want it to be a clean as possible. Obviously you don't see this on the road because a little wind would make things sketchy. Two discs seem more the norm, but he must be trying to tune his ride. There must not be too much difference otherwise he wouldn't do it. Really the 3. 4. 5 spoke front wheels don't seem to make sense but again, they must have run the numbers.

I know, just never seen it before..disc in front, spoked wheel in back.

The Disc front/Spoke back photo says he was training (maybe he had a newly glued tubular on his rear disc) - a later photo showing him winning using discs front and rear.

He would almost certainly have had a lighter gear on that wheel and would have then swapped over to his disk once he needed to once he was warmed up. Just makes it easier than changing sprockets if he has the spare wheel there.

It is more aero to have the disc on the front and deep rim in the back than vice versa, and indoors it's certainly a viable option. In the pic he was probably warming up and ran double discs for the race. This isn't about tuning. That was a spare/warm up wheel. The 3/4/5 spole front wheels do make sense for any race that isn't a TT. It has to do with steering and air pressure as the front wheel pivots to turn. The discs will act as sails and make steering harder. By having spoke holes, the air can pass through the wheel, and not induce areas of high/low pressure which will affect steering. It's easily felt through the handlebars.
