Wonder how the events of today in the UK concerning the operation of News International, and the loss of its share price and the loss of revenue from the withdrawn of advertising from its uk newspapers will effect the future of Team Sky ??
The sad loss of Bradley Wiggins will not help for sure.

Team Sky is a play thing for James, and that newspaper was <1% of news international revenue, and will be replaced, so no effect seems likely.

But the value of News Corp dropped $1.7 billion.

That said it will have very little impact. The share prices will bounce back and costs have been cut by the closure of News Of The World. They'll retain the readers by introducing something else that's much cheaper.

This won't lead to the end of Team Sky.

It will have no effect.

Rupert Murdoch is from another age. He is and will always be a newspaper man. He's just branched out.

His successor, and big cycling fan, James Murdoch couldn't care less about newspapers. For him it's all about TV, TV platforms and the internet. Sky is very big brand for that.

Still makes it very, very hard for me to cheer Sky, simply because of the evil f*cks bankrolling them. If the whole vile clan died in a fire, I'd be first on the scene with a can of petrol and my dancing shoes.

Fixed that for you. :) The whole of News International is just a means to an end.

Seriously, people demonise the Murdochs, maybe rightly so. But the idea that the behaviour of one organisation reflects on another is daft.

There's also the idea that the Murdochs micromanage - they don't. My cousin works for a Murdoch paper (WSJ) and used to right about Chinese economics, now European. He's never, ever been told what to write other than 'get me good stuff'.

View Team Sky for what and who they are, not for who writes the cheques.

First of all, it wont effect SKy. They have another 2yrs and a bit of their contract. But my understanding is that Sky's investment in cycling will end then, post 2012 olympics.

Secondly the News of the World has not closed down. It is purely rebranding as The sun on Sunday, which is what it always was anyway.

I know you have contacts with Sky, but I think you may be wrong with both of those.

1. Sky (the company) actually own Sky (the team) and Sky always been a company that backs a sport with money until it works. I don't think the 2012 Olympics have any relevance to their company strategy - I think their sights are set a lot higher. Bailing out is just not Sky's way. There will be a Sky team in 2020.

2. Newspapers are good, but fewer people are buying them. It's all about the internet now. If they relaunch it will only be to create a brand on the internet.

James Murdoch cares little for paper, just bits and bytes.

No the olympics isnt relevant to it, i just used that as a reference point.

The sky sponsorship deal ends at the end of 2014. Four year deal. If you asked me how confident I was that they would continue sponsoring the team beyond then, at the moment I would say about 50%

thesunonsunday.com and thesunonsunday .co.uk where both registered as domains on the 5th of this month ;)

NOTW will probably relaunch as the Sun on Sunday.

I work in intellectual property. Big companies register huge rafts of trademarks to cover every eventuality - most never used. Domain names are even cheaper to register. Those registrations mean nothing (they may be owned by squaters)

It may happen, but that's no indication.

What ever happens, I think Team Sky will continue for a long time. At the moment, they're a source of good news for NI.

I really wouldn't worry.

What I don't get is that everyone's talking about the entire staff being sacked. Surely they will just keep the same staff and just rebrand?

No, they've really all been sacked. My best friends brother in law is their deputy political editor. He's now on the dole. He's looking now for a job to cover his mortgage (which is worrying as that was our place stay for the 2012 Olympics)

No they don't. Thats not how the Murdochs work. See his first foray into UK publications.

The staff at the Sun have already been told they are going 7 days. They will be used to produce content for the "new" paper.

Great, so the next time I go to England and if I ever run out of toilet paper I know what to use then.
